• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Identical truck to mine (3rd Gen Ram Quadcab with 8’ bed & Leer topper).

No way I can touch this with but a 7’ Predator 10K on the roof.

I realize these guys ain’t doing it for mobile.
Doesn’t change a thing.

Roaming the country with a cordless drill and a 3/4 hole saw. For a small fee I'll drill the hole so hams/hobbyists can have a decent antenna install. For an additional fee (or a 6 pack of COLD beer) I'll come in the middle of the night while your significant other is asleep so they cannot complain about "ruining resale value" or "you are not allowed to install that ham radio crap in MY minivan*".

* I will NOT install antennas on any vehicles owned by anyone I sense to have whackerish tendencies or has ANY strobe lights installed.

Here’s one from a day ago I wish had the goofiest antenna ever.

A “storm chaser”. As one who’s always lived near, traveled, and worked in tornado alley with ancestry across it, a Citizen Band Radio tends to start lighting up on the Plains as nearby (unwilling) participants are getting caught up in the edges . . I have my doubts about the smarts of chasing the phenomenon though I’ve been witness to quite a few.

What’s in the voices you hear is information. At a deeper level than content, or fear. Gut feeling takes over.

Her body was found across the same field.

2024 is shaping up as a record year for tornadoes. Number, and ferocity.

IMG_5390.jpeg

IH40 from W of Amarillo, TX the 1,100-miles to Knoxville, TN is hazardous the whole way.

Or Waco, TX to Sioux Falls, SD up IH35 & IH29 nearly the same distance.

The storm that came across Houston recently (1-million without power), same thing. Radio to avoid, and Radio to deal with aftermath.

Goofy will get it done . .
if that’s all you have.

I bought a Predator 10K directly from Kale about 20 years ago. It’s been on many vehicles, usually center of roof. I’ve used it on 10m nets from the parking lot at work and otherwise almost always CB. It still looks and works like new.

Only goofy to those who aren’t aware of its fully modular construction, aircraft-grade aluminum, mid-coil design, and its performance as a better choice on-highway than a 9’ whip. (83” height vs 108”).

The DEW Line.

The base-load 7’ have their place (along with 7’ top load such as Skipshooter), but a 10K usually has the performance edge while moving.

“Height” is the actual hang-up for most.

Clays Radio one of the places where all those components can be bought for replacement:

Walcott re-organized the antenna section last year to put a warehouse of these and others on the wall.

Goofy is a lip mount. A 3’ mag mount. A hitch receiver mount. An RV ladder-mount. An NGP.

I’ve overtaken & passed some of these with a 15-MPH variance and TX time for them is a few seconds towards the rear of a disappearing semi. Just as bad or worse in opposing directions, and only slightly better at right-angles.

It’s important to test.

I think I’ll stick with my trusty Larsen NMO 30 coil and W640 whip on a Larsen NMO-MM magnet mount fed by my President McKinley. On the roof of our SUV, the mount is 6 ft. off the ground and it works very well, thank you.

Have a picture you could post?
Total antenna height from rooftop?
Thx.

The total antenna height from the roof is 69” and the roof line is 6 ft. above the ground.

Thanks. Under 12’ is city-friendly as I see it given the design-type. And the antenna height of 5’ 9” and total height of 11.75’, again, makes it a highway contender.

For most it’s that it’s low-key. Almost stealth. On a permanent NMO mount this factor goes up again. Add NRC-equipped radio and it’s 2024 performance.

The last 1-2 feet in length (and TTL height) do matter, but I’d be pleased if many more folks had this set-up to use on-road.

An NRC PRESIDENT Harrison lacks SSB, but size-wise it’s easy to install. With a KL203, one gets to play with the big boys (clarity; RX & TX). That’d be a great gift package with this antenna.

For the good of all concerned.

I should add that my CB setup is only in the car for road trips, not for day-to-day use. As a temporary mobile CB installation, it works very well for me. Even a few SSB DX contacts have been made with it.

Understood. Obvious to me with mag mount. Pointed it out for others. Thx

You just don’t want to listen to all the Kussin’ on the Kennedy,
right?

I’ll never understand living in Chicagoland and being a local or regional driver. Nothing like trying to get in from Indiana during a lake-effect white-out.
