With regards to the remote head,is there also a speaker in it to,I have not much to do with them except for seeing the Uniden 996"s unit.

From the pictures it doesn't appear to have a speaker in the head, but I see a headphone jack on the radio body.

PSR-900 Dimensions?

Perhaps someone at CES could obtain the dimension measurements for the radio, as well as for the detachable control head?

And also the configuration of ports, connections, jacks, etc.?

I'll bet the radio case is DIN-E. 2 1/4 x 7 1/4 x 5 5/16 inches (55 x 185 x 135 mm) HWD.

Still doesn't not have buttons but at least it will prevent me from hooking up my portable all the time. Now the question will be if they will sell the mount/docks separate/cheap so I can take the piece from my home to my car and just plug it in.

Makes you wonder why there's a battery icon on the display on the remote head. :)

I think it would have been better to have SD card slot on the remote head. Think about if you installed the body under a seat or in the trunk? It would be a pain to switch out the card.

If the software is the same as the 800, you could possible use the microSD card with an adapter in the 900 without redoing anything.

They should have used a knob for the volume. Might be easier to adjust while driving.

The flat cable for connecting the head to the body looks like a normal CAT5 cable, only flat.

Space considerations in mobile, command post, and base setups. You can leave the radio inside a console, and have less clutter in the operating area. In a mobile setting, you just have to find room to mount the head unit, which could be as simple as a sheet metal under some dashboard screws, using the magnets to hold the position.

So if you put the radio under the seat or in the trunk and just use the remote head how do you hear it if there is no speaker in the head?

No radios have speakers in the control head. (Except for some commercial radios...)
People have been asking for a remote head scanner for a long time. This is cool.

This will be great for installation in many vehicles that don't have enough room to mount a full scanner. You can install the base unit in the trunk, closer to the antenna, and then run the control head up to the dash. External speakers can be run anywhere in the vehicle.
This is a much better solution the the Uniden remote head...

Mock-up from a PSR-800 display.

Good point. To update the DB from under the seat is going to be a pain unless a faster method with the USB port is used. The knob could be multi-function.

Install an external speaker, in the passenger area of your vehicle, in a safe and convenient area. (It could be on the back deck, aiming up, so the sound bounces off your rear window, and fills the car. It could be mounted along the transmission hump, aimed directly at the driver's position, etc...)

Safe is used to imply that the speaker should not be in the way of getting in or out of the vehicle, should not obstruct the driver's view, and should not interfere with seatbelts/airbags/etc...

I hope that connecting cable is just a temporary cable for the show. Sticking out the side like that will make the cable stretch too far towards the rider's side of the dashboard.

But, the good news is GRE has produced a remote head that many of us have asked for.

Note the logos above and below the up/down arrows on the directional pad.

Also I agree. The connector coming out the side of the control head will hopefully not be the location for final production. I hate that. Some ham radio companies do it too... it's like they aren't thinking about how people plan to mount it.

Also cool accessory idea for any GRE person browsing the thread... a DIN mount for just the control head. Maybe one that fits slightly smaller euro-din style opening's as well so for those of us with Asian and European vehicles can mount the control head under a single DIN radio in our Double-DIN head unit space :)

The booth display placard says "Digital" but makes no reference to P25. I'm thinking the '900 is a mobile version of the '700.
