Additional Cleveland info

Cleveland had requested an STA from the FCC for P25 frequencies. The STA was rejected. Cleveland then sought to modify (add P25 Freqs) to their existing licences.

On 5-11-2012 modifications were approved for the following licenses, WNGK825 and WPFF205.

18 new freqs were approved for the following:

8K70D1W P25 Linear Simulcast Modulation ASTRO (9.6 kbps in 12.5 kHz channelspace)

20K0F1E Encrypted Quantized Voice (Motorola DVP, DES, DES-XL - NOT P25 DES-OFB/AES)

Here is what the freq adds looks like for the Brooklyn Heights tower.

Does that mean their radios will be encrypted or at least capable of encryption?

20K0F1E is the emission designator for their current Motorola VSELP system.

It simply means they can use P25 or Moto VSELP on these freqs. They are going to be testing and comparing how each system (P25 vs Moto Velps) works. Plus it gives them flexibility during the transition period.

Regarding encryption, as far as I know every P25 system has the ability to do encryption. It just depends on what the users want.

Same here.

That's the same TG I heard the first testing on. If Cleveland's roll out is anything like the MARCS Cuyahoga County P25, it will be a while before any steady traffic starts. Mostly a lot of short tests.

Back in May when Cleveland filed an STA with the FCC. One of the supporting document stated that Cleveland did not expect to have their new radio system ready till the second quarter of 2013.

Cleveland has every city department on the current system. So it's considerably more than moving PD, Fire and EMS. Lots of people and lots of gear to be transitioned. Plus SWRCN is now part of the mix.

Cuyahoga County and Cleveland both did sales pitches to all of the Cuyahoga County communities, trying to get them to join their respective P25 systems. Aside from SWRCN, did any other communities make commitments?

who knows i was hopeing that the southwest system would get bigger its not easy to monitor them with only one tower at pearl&boston road.so only time will tell i know the city has a lot of radios to change so i'm sure it will take time.

SWRCN is pretty much useless these days anyway with everyone ENC.
All you got left is BP PD and who cares about "On Scene/In Quarters" FDs.

At 4:40 P.M. I monitored testing on TG1 between mobile units. One was on Miles Road at the Chagrin River Valley in Bentleyville. The other unit was at i71 and Rt 303 in Brunswick.

That's some pretty good coverage.
