I am trying to figure out what scanner to buy! It’s been years since I have owned one and am so confused at all the things that are popping up! I live in la Verne California 91750 zip and want something to listen to police and fire maybe airports! But am so lost as to what to get something easy to set up because at 76 there is only so much I can figure out. Thanks

Might be better answered in the Greater Los Angeles and Inland Areas Discussion.

Just perusing, seems that where you are at you have limited scanning opportunities as your site is encrypted. No scanner can decode encrypted transmissions.

I am not from CA either, however from the DB looks like only La Verne PD is on the ICI sytem and encrypted. The OP stated that he would like to hear PD, Fire, and Airports. La Verne is serviced by LA County for Fire and EMS which are on conventional UHF as well as the LA County Sheriffs Office. Providing the DB is up to date the two of those should provide plenty of listening, Airports depending on the OP's location to the nearest airport could also be monitored on the Air Band. A lot of California has been bitten by the encryption bug but as for this instance it might not be too bad. As for model suggestion I'd say contact the locals on the California forum and see what they use and suggest in your area.
