You should not have been able to connect the two cables using a male-to-male. The Garmin cable should plug directly into the BWZG1844001 cable.

Using Home Patrol with Garmin GPS

OK so for the record and anyone else wanting to use a GPS with your Home Patrol.
Here is what worked for me:
1. HOME Patrol Scanner
2. GARMIN GPS 18x Receiver (with 9 pin connector)
3. UNIDEN GPS Adapter Cable BWZG1844001
4. From "The Shack" DB9 Male to DB9 Male Serial Coupler Catalog #: 26-1410 (Male to male)
5. From "The Shack" a Null Modem adapter Catalog # 26-1411 Male to female)

I plugged all together and it recognized the GPS within seconds.
All works quite well

Many thanks to all who commented.

I must reiterate...if you use the BWZG1844001 cable you need neither the male-to-male nor the null-modem adapter. The BWZG1844001 plugs directly into the Garmin's 9-pin connector.

If, however you have the BWZY1227001 (that is the cable that comes with the BCD396XT, BC346XT, BCD996XT, etc), you do need the above adapters. The BWZG1844001 has a male connector on it...the male-to-male connector cannot physically connect to it.

Using Home patrol with Garmin GPS

I ordered my BWZG1844001 cable online and received it with a 9 pin female end on it .....not a male end as I had expected. AND YES I was a little upset when it arrived with the female end. That is why after receiving my cable I needed to purchase a male to male coupler in hopes of it working. What I discovered is no matter what....you need a NULL Modem adapter in line for the HP to recognize the Garmin GPS. NULL Modems are available on line with (male to male), (male to female) or (female to female) configurations. As my local RS store only stocked the (male to female) configuration, I had no alternative but to keep my (male to male) 9 pin coupler in the mix. I am thankful at the end of the day everything works good.

Without this forum I may not have tried using the NULL modem and may have never got it working the way I wanted it. It's all a learning experience and hopefully this forum can help others out experiencing the same issue.

It sounds like there was a pick error on the part (they look nearly identical). If you use the BWZG1844001, you do not need a null modem adapter, as the pin-swap is already accomplished in the cable itself (the entire point of that cable is to eliminate the need for the adapters).

finally I find someone from ont. with a homepatrol1. I am seriously interested in the homepatrol but am very green at the new modern style of scanning. I have had a realistic pro 32 for 19 years and us it strickly for local fire calls.(volunteer) I am now retired and would like to get into scanner and it seems that the homepatrol is the best for me.I live in Fergus so I am wondering if this is maybe a waste of money as there is a strong possiblity there will not be much for me to scan. Could you please give me a little advise as to how you make out with yours in Orono.
Thanks in Advance

Is there any real difference between the RS232 adapter cable that came with my BC-GPSK GPS receiver and the supposedly "Required" BWZG1844001 adapter? The included RS232 plugs into my home patrol just fine and the GPS reads connected. But when I try to "Auto Locate" it tells me my location could not be determined.

The BWZG1844001 is now included with the BC-GPSK (as of about 2 months ago).

Auto Locate does not use GPS. It scans until it finds a Motorola or P25 control channel, then uses the information contained in the data stream to identify the site, then looks up the location.

OK, now you have confused me. I have a GPS hooked up and working, and when I was driving I hit "autolocate" and it did come up with the area.

So how exactly do I use the HP with GPS? Do i just enable it and it finds the right database for me on the fly?

That's exactly what you do.

Correct. As soon as the GPS starts sending valid location sentences to the HP-1 the HP-1 uses that data to select what to scan.

Auto Locate is convenient if you are in an area where you don't know the zip code and don't have a GPS. It will (relatively) quickly determine the general region you are in and select channels based on that. It practices patent 8,090,388.
