My old laptop, HP Zv5000 with XP Home Edition, hard drive took a dump, it wont boot up and makes a lot of squeeling noises.
I don't have any discs for this machine. If I were to replace the drive how can I reload windows? I have the windows key numbers from the sticker on the bottom.
Is there any way to do this without having to buy a new windows disc?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Chuck
okay so the squeeling? bad HDD Bearings? time for a new one....
Chuck, your drive is "clicking" sound like replacement drive is required.
he said SQUEELING not CLICKING...... *roll eyes*
okay once again, to the rescue, lets break down this topic.
OP needs a XP Home CD, i have copies of both, in Retail and OEM Setups, as ISO formats, hell, you throw me a some small $$ via Paypal, ill mail you one + a Generic Drivers DVD with 4GB of Drivers that will load easily into windows.
Squeeling Sounds? are they vibrating sounds or like metal scraping metal? either way, if your HDD is gone, your going to need another. is it PATA-IDE or SATA? what size? do you want the same size? are you going to need recovery of lost data?
give me some quick answers and ill help you figure this out quick and clean
Depends on the type of repair you're doing, if you're using command line utilities you can, if you're doing a repair install you need to use the same version as the installation you're trying to repair.
yes, it HAS to be the same Version and Service Pack Revision....
Generally you should use the HP Recovery CD that came with your laptop or was generated using the utility provided on the laptop's hard disk
ummm okay nice reading skills, he just said in the opening post, he DOES NOT have the discs, and then the Drive is dead? so how is he going to use the discs if he cant find them? and then how is he going to execute the command to create the discs if he cant even boot into windows on a dead drive?
You may just buy new copy of Windows 7 or latest 8.1 and start fresh. In my opinion it is a waste of time reinstalling XP now.
problem here, unless he has increased the RAM to at least 2GB ( dont know if the board even supports 2x 1GB DDR modules ) and upgraded the GPU to something newer than a GF4 440 Mobile GO Series, thats not going to happen. 440's do not support Win 7 or 8 WDDM requirements, they are AGP 8x Interfaced, and only have 64MB of GDDR1. even if he was to get 7 or 8 onto that laptop, it would be a poor visual display and slower than snail poop frozen to the ground. not to mention the LCD is a 1024x768x32bpp 4:3 Letterbox screen, very nasty resolutions for Aero themes and no HD capability.
