Ahh, nothing like a good 435/profanity over amateur radio b'awwfest thread to whittle away a slow afternoon.
Bottom line is, there's something for everyone in amateur radio. I cannot emphasize it enough. If you're a good God-fearing Dudley Do-Right there's a frequency and a mode for you. If you're an angry right-wing militant separatist there's a frequency and a mode for you. If you're a wide-eyed new licensee, well, I heartily suggest taking all of it in. Find a club or group that does some really esoteric and off-the-beaten-path stuff like microwave or moonbounce and see what they're all about. Try SSTV. Cobble together a cheap HF receiving setup (like a Yaesu FRG-7 and an indoor active antenna, author-approved) and play with digital decode. Try 6 meters. But for crying out loud, don't rip up your license because the 435 crowd/mindset twists your titty.. or, for that matter, because the kilocycle cops and prostate nets liquefy your brain. Radical thinking, I know.
As one of the oft-lamented new crop of no-code punk-a$$ youngsters I can't help but laugh and relish a little all of the BANE OF OUR EXISTENCE hatred dished out by the curmudgeon-y old man proletariat. At least we're DOING SOMETHING to stave off the attrition caused by your unwillingness to embrace or even accept change. Go to your grave clinging to your OO forms and sainted straight-keys for all I care, I'll be right here building P25 repeaters and spraying your precious HF spectrum with ALE.. and using every single one of George Carlin's forbidden words on 900 simplex. But I digress.
On the repeaters I built or help maintain we don't allow the 7 words of infamy, but we don't go for prostates and the weather either. When I'm on there the discussion usually revolves around Motorola or who got trashed and made a fool of themselves at the party last weekend. Other times it's Alex Jones/Infowars-type stuff.. not my cup of tea personally but infinitely more interesting than the typical repeater fare. And yes, sometimes we do get silly and start keying over each other because someone wont pause long enough for anyone else to get in.. but the point is, we're having fun with the hobby and using the airwaves. People lose sight of that entirely too easily sometimes. I'll go out of my way to make sure my fun isn't interfering with your fun, and as long as you can do likewise we're cool. And y'know, if you ever get to talk to a FCC field agent you'll probably find that a lot of them take the same approach, which is a big part of 435's continued existence.
Anyway, tl;dr you get what you put in and there's enough room for everyone. No need to get all Part 97 about it. Oh, and in case it wasn't glaringly obvious CDN is one of Karol's puppet accounts.
you make a few good points. there is something for everyone in ham radio and dont worry about the old crumudgeons. i am a 5wpm general which in their eyes is almost as bad as a no coder..lol the profanity exists in certain places but contrary to popular crumudgeon belief has been around for over 20 years, long before the no coders existed. listen around and you will find there are a bunch of good people from all walks of life in ham radio. the NUT is an aberration, not the norm.
