I've just set up an A99 antenna, to my grandfather's Sears Roadtalker 40 base/mobile and it doesn't seem like I can transmit or be heard? My antenna is set up at 40 ft., next to my house; the meters swing to the extreme right when I squawk, but never an answer. I live in West Chicago, IL, and pick up Oklahoma....on USB. It's the original Sears mic - do I need an upgrade or additional tuning?

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Before trying upper or lowers -- try just standard am... did you tune your antenna? Check coax for shorts? what is your swr? do you have a second rig you can go down the street and listen?
Mic being stock isn't a problem, unless it's dead/shorted... if you have a meter and it's just going from one side to the other when dead key - has hte radio been tweakedmodded/peaked/messed with?

plus-is your coax new with reliable connectors? or is it an old run with kinks in it? like jassing said, there could even be a short in there.

Try when you have a friend, with a radio, to work with. Sad fact of CB, you may be getting out but nobody willing to answer.

Yea; that's why I asked about peaked/tweaked -- if it is stock; that's a lower possibility than coax or high swr... It seems all "new" people NEVER tune their antennas "I paid a lot; it should be ok" or "It worked at my buddy's place, so it should work here" so they leave it alone -- a cable that got bent can screw it up too. -- NOw if he's keyed up with a dead short a few times -- then finals or more... testing swr should give more info...
Uh oh, meters swinging to extremes is a red flag. Looks like an antenna and/or coax problem like maybe a short or something became disconnected. Beyond the scope of discussion, the best we can do is speculate, it needs physical attention.
