If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello All!

My tiny local radio shop went out of business because the owner passed. The owners kids put all the stuff for sale in an estate. I acquired 4 Kenwood NX-800's that are read and write protected from the estate sale. I do have the "Engineer" version of KPG-111D v1.40, I am just unaware on how to retrieve/rewrite or wipe the password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

The engineer version doesn't pay attention to passwords at all - you can read and write and reset any password present. You should be able to simply read the radios and delete the passwords, or put new ones in. If you cannot, then you don't have the engineering version.

It's been a while since I've used it, but as I recall, here are the basic steps:

1) Write down radio's model and serial number (especially for portables).
2) Connect radio/cable/computer, run the KPG software. Set com port.
3) In software, on MENU BAR, select TOOLS, then select TRANSCEIVER INFORMATION. After it reads from the radio, note the model # and other details.
4) On MENU BAR, select MODEL and make sure the spaces for model, band, options match you radio.
5) On MENU BAR, select TOOLS, *Password Reset (If that option doesn't show on your TOOLS menu, you probably don't have an Engineering version of the KPG software.)
4) In the *Password Reset window, enter the serial number, check the 3 boxes, then click "OK".
5) On MENU BAR, select PROGRAM, then EXECUTE PASSWORD RESET.

If you get an error, you might have a version of the KPG software that's too old and doesn't match the firmware in your radio.

Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the help! I was missing the execute step. All good on the NX-800 I'm now having an issue with the TK-8180-K2, I am unable to enter the serial number that starts with a letter (B), rather than a number, the software wont allow letters. I am able to read the radio without issue but it asks for a pw when writing. Sorta stuck on this one this evening...

Thanks

Anyone got a wiring diagram for the accy jack programming cable? I understand if you program the radio that way, it bypasses passwords.

I have a whole bushel basket full of password protected fleet pulls.....and I don't have engineering software.

Look at the schematic in the service manual and see if pins 2 and 3 are labeled as serial data and 7 as ground. I've been able to make up a 2, 3 & 7 serial cable that plugs into the DB9 on my Toughbook laptop and have it work on the NXR-810 repeater.
