When you pay that kind of money for a unit, you should not have to wrap it in plastic,I now own 3 800's and after 1 month you would think these radios had been in a battle by the look at the faceplates,I can wait until GRE mails me out there fix in November.

Mine after 5 days started to ruboff, serial #2712.
I removed the rest of mine, with out removing the face plate I wet a rage with Orange Goo Off and carefully wiped
or rubbed the face plate making sure not to push anything down between the keys and then I used a can of air and blew air through the headphone jack, so it would force any loose debris out!

Lighter Fluid

Hey everybody new member here but I have been scanning for years, I just purchased the PSR800 last week and ran in to the wearing problem on the front panel. I contacted GRE and they said it would not void the warranty removing the paint to the shiny plastic, with that said I have been trying for 40 minutes using lighter fluid (grill lighter fluid) and have been having a very very hard time removing the paint. I would say only about 5% maybe 10% has come off, does it make a difference whether its charcoal grill lighter fluid or actual lighter fluid for like Zippos etc? Is there anything else I could use that will get the job done without damaging the plastic underneath the paint? I would really like to get the rest of it removed ASAP tomorrow after work because it looks kinda funky now with just a little removed and I think it looks 100x better with it being shiny. Thanks for the help and love the forum BTW, I have been a lurker for years on here but finally took the plunge.

Thumbs up Maybe try a clear LCD lens protector?
I don't have a PSR 800 and someone else may have already thought of this idea, but if the finish is wearing off why not use one of the clear LCD lens protectors over the front? You could use a sharp xacto blade to form cut outs around the buttons.
It seems it would be a cheap investment.

I used Goof Off, comes in a small yellow can. Sparingly applied with a q-tip, wiped off with soft rag, cleaned with computer screen cleaner on a microfiber towel.

Awesome, no hazard but the smell - which is why I say sparingly.

I have some goo gone I will try, should be the same thing just different brand. Thanks for the tip I will let you know how it goes. A little off topic here but I have been using the Eneloop 2000mah with the LaCross BC700 and I am getting wonderful battery life, over 12hrs per charge. Always have 4 in the charger and 4 in the scanner. Thanks again for the tip barovelli

No definite word on if they fixed it or not, as far as other posts said they are still testing the new paint.

Why dont they just release whatever paint was on the first 1000 low # serial numbers that didnt have the problem or just release the unit with the shiny face without the black paint layer over it.

According to one post above someone who just bought one has no problem so far with thier unit

Does anyone have the definitive word on this, yet? Has GRE fixed the problem?

Well the goo gone worked like a charm, mine is now nice and shiny and I like it a lot better than stock. No need to send it in now. Thanks for the tip

I'm also thinking about gettng the 800, but would like to know if the problems that have been reported about the numbers wearing off and the display screen easily scratched have been resolved. Does anyone know for sure?

There are no numbers on the 800. Anything lettered will not come off. I put a screen saver over my dispaly screen and have no problems. I love the 800 and can't wait for GRE to come out with a base model . I have had mine since July and have a keeper as it picks up a digital system over 20 miles away that i could never pick when it was trunked analog and i am in a deep valley.

Thanks for the report. Where did you get a screen saver for the 800?

I bought a package of Giffin universal screen care, cut to fit the display area for mine. I think i got it at Wal mart. I have enough for several but i have only used one since July. I have not had any dust in the display area or scratches. The reason i bought the 800 was to listen to digital systems and not analog. I did a lot of research as to which to buy the Uniden HP or the 800. For me it was the wanting a scanner to carry to and put in my pocket like a traditional scanner and the better digital conversion as I tried a friends HP and for me the 800 was the better choice. Do your own research and make sure you buy the right scanner for you as they are expensive and you have to be happy with it.

I did the same. The screens on the PSR-800 scratch when you look at them the wrong way (more like scuffing). I put a screen protector on after just a few days and am glad I did. Just get any pack of screen protectors and cut them to size. This is one of the first things a new 800 owner will need to do, along with picking up a few sets of powerex 2700 or duracell 2650 batteries, since it's a battery hog. One other think I recommend that new users do is ditch the stubby antenna and at least get a standard GRE / RS scanner antenna, if not a RS / GRE 800 antenna, or the dual band antenna of your choice. The stock stubby unit doesn't do that well, but is cheap to replace. I could add to the list getting a 4GB or larger class 10 ultra high speed card, but I'll stop there.

As a scanner user of nearly 40 years now, having owned all the great ones, this radio stands alone in my book. After a while you get quite used to the four way button in concert with the menu buttons, and you can get anywhere you want over hundreds of scanlists quicker than you migh suspect before getting used to the unit. Great audio, great display (you will need to use your backlight), great modern design. No problem with paint or letters wearing and it's with me every day. I truly love it.

Is that a picture of the 800 in your avetar? Can the color in the background be changed, like in the Uniden 396XT?

Yes that's my radio in the avatar. No you can't change the color, but I personally have grown to love it. It's a gentle blue to my eyes at night, and my favorite back light of all time is the Pro-2006 blue back light so to me it's great. I do think being able to change color would have been nice. After owning a BCD996XT I was BUMMED when I bought my BCT15X and discovered that unlike the first radio, I could not change to the blue color I like.
