I've noticed local fire/ambulance dispatch giving alphanumeric codes at the end of their calls (A11, B17)

I'm guessing these are map grid coordinates.

anyone else hearing these?

Do they usually say "Page, A11, B17" beforehand? That would reference the map page they must refer to in the "map book" for an address if they miss the information. At least that's how most California agencies do that.

Back in the days of the paper ADC map books, you might have heard 27A12 or something similar. That translates to the commercial map book published by Alexandria Drafting, page 27, grid square A12. Many area jurisdictions used them. In Anne Arundel, we switched to using Box areas to give general locations.

More than likely it is EMS dispatch codes and not map coordinates.

In my area on EMS calls, they announce the nature of the call and at that point, they will say like "Delta 1 Response" Delta being "Serious Life Threat" and 1 being "Abdominal Pains/Problems"

On fire calls, they announce the nature of the call, give the address, then A2 on the map.

So here it's pretty cut and dry. Phonetic words relate to EMS codes and the A1, B5 etc are map locations.
