Pathfinder-05

Decided to drive to the local airport (CYQI) and catch Pathfinder-05 getting ready to depart off runway 24. This is a CP-140M Aurora, based out of 14 Wing at CFB Greenwood. About 15 minutes after departure(1543Z), I heard him declare "Pan Pan Pan" because of a bird-strike and headed direct to Greenwood. Mentioned 5 souls on board and nothing more heard. I'm sure they made it down ok.
This particular airframe was recently in the UK and was part of a very informative article about the recent upgrades.

Very nice looking condition.. Some of the US Navy Reserve P-3's were looking pretty ragged
near their end of cycles but guess they figured why bother..
Submarines don't like these guys! :)

Don't know about the subs but this ancient airframe is still destined to go the way of the Dodo bird. I hope the eventual Canadian replacement goes a little smoother than the 30 year Sea-King replacement program.

Be sad to see it go, another plane I grew up with will be gone.. Wondering we'll get P-8s? I've tracked a couple in the last week or so and they've been the first two I've seen.

I still remember the thunderous sound of the old Canadair Argus, climbing out from RWY 08, past my grandparents home near Greenwood.

Interesting to find out the Argus held the world record for longest un-refuelled flight (31h) prior to the global circumnavigation by Rutan's Voyager.

Last night running station pF

Hi folks.

Just letting you know I'm heading out of NS tomorrow, so my temp station pF will be shutting down.

It has been great being a prat of this community, albeit just for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the files, links, and info. NS is a great place to listen!

Wishing you all the best,
Rob

Had a Hoist tanker and an unknown receiver a bit ago. Guess they're reaching you about now.

Ok thanks. I think I just caught c/s SPIRIT saying that he could contact BRICKYARD direct now on 274.550. Unsure if its related to the AR020 flight.

Is that one of those tv capture cards converted into a airnav radar box?

USN C-40 165835, Convoy 4262, just landed in Halifax. I usually don't give these guys much thought when they're going by at 40,000 feet but it's cool to see one at 1500 as they pass though.

It looks like a typical PlanePlotter setup.
The map outline showing on the right side and the aircraft listings on the left.

Yep - PlanePlotter it is :)

Simple RTL-based dongle, antenna pigtail so I can hook up to a BNC connector rather than the MCX that is on the dongle.

Total cost of set up (excluding laptop!) :
RTL Dongle $17 (down to $9 on Amazon now - in fact a $9 one should be arriving to me in the US today)
RS 800MHz antenna (borrowed from scanner) - $25
PlanePlotter software - $39
Dump 1090 software or RTL1090 software - free

With this setup I can view aircraft for over 200nm. My fixed station in Alberta has a greater range (has a roof-mounted home-made antenna cut for 1090MHz), and it runs PlanePlotter on an old XP machine that someone was throwing away!

BTW, that dongle was the best $17 I ever spent ;-)

Dongle Antenna

What's the best thing to use for a outdoor dongle antenna? I'm going to order one of these from amazon soon. Can I use a old disc one scanner antenna? Or is there something better? With my current scanner antenna I have about 225-250 mile range. I'd like to try to be in that same area if possible. Thanks
