OPEC 81 #86-0028

0620z OPEC 81 #86-0028 up in Northeast Mass for returning Buffs.
Res in AR80 for 0600z-0800z
I 'accidentally' left 3 scanners on a bit too loud. The wife really didn't appreciate the tankers call for the BUFFS sounding more like an Emergency Measures Announcement at 0617Z in the morning (2:20am local).

Wow...this had to be one of the longest missions I've followed. The poor guys were flying over 24 hours.
Always get a kick out of hearing the sound of those oxygen masks over the radio.

Old throwbacks to cold war for sure and useful as conventional bombers
but you got to wonder as 3rd leg of nuclear triad not much use.
Buffs and Russian TU-95's must light up like billboards on radar missions along with tankers needed
along with how much time it takes them to get anywhere.
Media gets excited when TU-95's buzz UK coast but in reality a naval ship with missiles would
splash them long before they got close to combat in war time.
But it is fun to catch them playing the game :)

Yeah that's a good point. I was explaining to a coworker when I was amped up about possibly seeing the B-52s yesterday that this was the NATO equivalent of the media freaking out because F-15s intercepted Bears off the California coast. I like BUFFs because I (along with a bunch of other generations hehe) grew up with them being around, but defence has come a long way from Curtis LeMay days. Maybe it's all a show for their media/people who aren't plane freaks to panic over like Tu-22/95s are for ours.

I'm not sure what their perceived role would be in the event of a conflict/prodding of the Russians, ALCM launch platform I guess? It wouldn't be like they'd be scaring them into believing BUFFs would be orbiting dropping a GBU-31 or 10 or anything, at least I wouldn't think.

Sorry for being so late....I monitored these two guys. They said they were headed to AR777. Funny thing is they were also on 11175khz. Lots of fun banter between them on interplane 324.100 and 238.200. Discussions of an upcoming deployment to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

AR20-SW scheduled 1530Z

Fighter Control UK reports that Shuck82 (on PlanePlotter as E-3B [AE11D3] 71-1408) departed the UK at about 1030Z headed West. That would line up nicely as the probable receiver for today's AR20-SW reservation of 1530Z-1630Z. Beautiful clear skies today...hope to get a pic of this Sentry.

SHUCK82

I would have been severely depressed had I missed this one. About the best conditions ever...crisp & clear sky and he's leaving heavy contrails today;

I thought Moncton Centre referred to it as Maine99. That's what I heard sitting at HIAA with a handheld.

Oh, sorry...I misread the identifier HIAA (used to seeing YHZ) and thought you were further South of me. When MAINE99 first started up the track, he was talking with MAINE85. Sounded like they would be tanking further down the track.
Sorry for the confusion...and a great pic, BTW.
