I hate jumping in threads out of nowhere, but I'm monitoring next to Wright-Patterson in Dayton and I hear a lot of the same activity you all do; figured I'd try and contribute a bit. Had two last night of some interest:
CHILI 55 (C-5*, possibly 87-0039) and OKIE 90 (KC-135R, 58-0058) were up in the late evening for training in AR-315E.
*Members of the 433rd AW are deployed here for two weeks while Lackland's runway is being repaired. They brought along....
- 43 maintenance workers
- several flying crews (noted so far: CHILI 09, 14, 43 and 55)
- 1 C-5A, 70-0456
- 1 C-5B, 87-0039 (borrowed from the 439th AW)
70-0456 was flying earlier in the day yesterday and had an APU fire shortly after returning, so I'm pretty sure 87-0039 was the aircraft flying in the evening.
The other hit I had was SCALP 99 (B-52H, 61-0011); returning from Scotland enroute to KBAD when they had a hydraulic problem. Called Patterson Metro (344.600) for weather at KBAD and KFWH (as a backup), but both had thunderstorms moving in. Metro suggested a divert to KBIX or KNBG, but 99 responded that they had to land heavy because of their problem. Metro then said KSZL or KFFO were options.
SCALP 99 called Buckeye Control (349.400) to ask for a phone patch, but Buckeye couldn't - offered to call instead. 99 told them to dial DSN 78x-4409 and ask them to call ahead to KSZL. Said that KSZL was the primary and KFFO was the backup. Also asked Buckeye to check and see if Patterson could handle a B-52; 99 told to contact Patterson Dispatch. Buckeye reports that the DSN gives a busy tone.
99 called Patterson Dispatch (372.200) and reported their situation. Asked if Patterson could take them overnight, also needed Customs. Dispatch said Customs was short-handed and called to check on them; asked souls on board and if they were US citizens; 99 responded saying they had 9 and all were citizens. Dispatch called back saying they had Customs ready and would park them on HAZPAD 4, then called their unit with the information. 99 confirms they will be declaring an IFE with approach; gave their position as 80 miles south [more or less over Mt. Olivet] and would be there in 45 minutes after burning off some fuel.
[I headed over to a park next to the base to watch at this point.]
99 called Dayton Approach and requested TACAN 5L with a 15 mile final, given 25 miles by Dayton. 99 then declared an IFE: reported hydraulic malfunction, 3 hours of fuel, 9 souls on board. Dayton cleared them in on final and handed them off to Tower. Emergency vehicles were standing by to meet it after landing. During the approach; Tower cleared 99 to land at about 15 miles, asked for gear down confirmation at 2 miles. [Visual confirmation of tail 61-0011 on approach.] The landing was uneventful - 99 rolled out to the end and was checked out by emergency personnel before taxiing to park.
Sorry for the length of this post - just figured I'd be thorough. I'll report more traffic when I hear it.
