I hate jumping in threads out of nowhere, but I'm monitoring next to Wright-Patterson in Dayton and I hear a lot of the same activity you all do; figured I'd try and contribute a bit. Had two last night of some interest:

CHILI 55 (C-5*, possibly 87-0039) and OKIE 90 (KC-135R, 58-0058) were up in the late evening for training in AR-315E.

*Members of the 433rd AW are deployed here for two weeks while Lackland's runway is being repaired. They brought along....
- 43 maintenance workers
- several flying crews (noted so far: CHILI 09, 14, 43 and 55)
- 1 C-5A, 70-0456
- 1 C-5B, 87-0039 (borrowed from the 439th AW)

70-0456 was flying earlier in the day yesterday and had an APU fire shortly after returning, so I'm pretty sure 87-0039 was the aircraft flying in the evening.

The other hit I had was SCALP 99 (B-52H, 61-0011); returning from Scotland enroute to KBAD when they had a hydraulic problem. Called Patterson Metro (344.600) for weather at KBAD and KFWH (as a backup), but both had thunderstorms moving in. Metro suggested a divert to KBIX or KNBG, but 99 responded that they had to land heavy because of their problem. Metro then said KSZL or KFFO were options.

SCALP 99 called Buckeye Control (349.400) to ask for a phone patch, but Buckeye couldn't - offered to call instead. 99 told them to dial DSN 78x-4409 and ask them to call ahead to KSZL. Said that KSZL was the primary and KFFO was the backup. Also asked Buckeye to check and see if Patterson could handle a B-52; 99 told to contact Patterson Dispatch. Buckeye reports that the DSN gives a busy tone.

99 called Patterson Dispatch (372.200) and reported their situation. Asked if Patterson could take them overnight, also needed Customs. Dispatch said Customs was short-handed and called to check on them; asked souls on board and if they were US citizens; 99 responded saying they had 9 and all were citizens. Dispatch called back saying they had Customs ready and would park them on HAZPAD 4, then called their unit with the information. 99 confirms they will be declaring an IFE with approach; gave their position as 80 miles south [more or less over Mt. Olivet] and would be there in 45 minutes after burning off some fuel.

[I headed over to a park next to the base to watch at this point.]

99 called Dayton Approach and requested TACAN 5L with a 15 mile final, given 25 miles by Dayton. 99 then declared an IFE: reported hydraulic malfunction, 3 hours of fuel, 9 souls on board. Dayton cleared them in on final and handed them off to Tower. Emergency vehicles were standing by to meet it after landing. During the approach; Tower cleared 99 to land at about 15 miles, asked for gear down confirmation at 2 miles. [Visual confirmation of tail 61-0011 on approach.] The landing was uneventful - 99 rolled out to the end and was checked out by emergency personnel before taxiing to park.

Sorry for the length of this post - just figured I'd be thorough. I'll report more traffic when I hear it.

Thanks for the information Jared as a lot of OH equipment either transits the KY area or works the AirRefueling routes directly over KY. We are also able to hear some of the fighter action from the ranges in southern OH and IN down here in southern KY. You might also be able to hear some of the JSTARs E8 activity once in a while from the orbits that are set up over KY. Thanks again for the info.

I was actually just reading up on JSTARS this afternoon in anticipation of listening for it. I hear E-3s calling Metro often (SENTRY 21 and 07 yesterday), and I've seen E-8s stop by to do approaches recently.

Of note for today (some others, but nothing all that exciting):
VENUS 92 (C-32A, 98-0002) - approaches; to KADW
SCALP 99 (B-52H, 61-0011) - departed to KBAD

Looks like Buckeye and Brush Creek will be hot today. 240.350 for BLUE ASH, 138-144 interplane. Expect to hear the 178th FW and NSDO (RNLAF) flying. Callsigns logged this week include BEAST, BLADE, NUKE, SABER, and SHACK.

SOONER 86 (KC-135R, 58-0063) - cleared to KFFO as filed except change route to read SGH, APE 260, APE, AIR. Not sure where they were going after that, but they're up for AR somewhere - maybe in the MOA.

Picking up a pulsing signal on 143.200; probably unrelated (maybe even interference), but worth noting just in case.

PAT 7104 (UC-35A1, 97-0104) departing Patterson at 1755Z. Probably going to KDAA.

Interplane on 139.000...no callsign yet, but I'll find out soon - they're talking about heading to Patterson for SFOs. Flight of four F-16s.

Just got it; it's SABER FLIGHT. 11 and 12 are going to KSGH - push V10 (143.000) for SOF, then U3 (probably KSGH Tower). 13 and 14 are on V12 (139.000) and will do a few SFOs at Patterson.

My window has a view of the approach to 5L at Patterson - visual on both. SABER 13 is an F-16D, but I can't make out the tail. 14 is 87-0283, the 178th FW flagship. Both loaded out pretty well: carrying AMAs, CATM-9Ms, and 370-gal tanks. Right turnout VFR back to Springfield.

Now hearing someone calling BLUE ASH on 240.350, same caller on interplane 141.600. Flight of two. Callsign numbers are 51 and 52.

ATOMIC 1 (FLIGHT?) departing KSGH at 1952Z - probably headed out to the MOAs.

They are...1-4 with BLUE ASH on 240.350. Not hearing any interplane chatter - might be on UHF.

So far today (all recorded on DAY A/D 269.275 while I was in class):

ATOMIC 1 (FLIGHT?) - on course
BLADE 51 (FLIGHT?) - on course
UNIDENTIFIED - right direct LUK
SHACK FLIGHT (x4) - request heading 300, 8B9 and 9B10; push 316.7 (no joy), push xxx.45 (probably ZID 18 269.45)

Interplane on V12 139.000.

??? 51 (B-52H, unid) just called Patterson Metro for weather for (K?)OCF at 1700Z. Gave position as 20 miles SE of Indianapolis, FL380...check UHF center frequencies and you'll probably catch it over KY/TN.

SABER 11 did an SFO at Patterson on the way back home - right turnout VFR to Springfield.

VADER 04 (C-130H, 89-9104) landed 1515Z, dropping off 20 pax; to KGPT. Departing 1535Z, "see you in a few hours."

RHINO 91 (C-5A, unid) departing 1525Z for KWRB.

Cancel that - calling BUCKEYE CONTROL at 1533Z for both slats in transit, only retracting halfway. Back inbound to get it fixed.

STING 31 FLIGHT x2 killing time doing approaches at Patterson. Departing at 1530Z for BKL. Interplane on 139.625.

N2767 HEAVY ("the Google jet") was just with Dayton, now switching to ZID.

Lots of good flyovers today because of the USAF Marathon; RIBBY 21 FLIGHT 2x F-16s and the Wright B Flyer (N3786B).
