i don't recall if this was asked could not find anything on it but for the pro comm tactical 149.605 how often is this freq used?

It wasn't a Toronto-Specific channel. It was "PTAC". There used to be repeaters all over Ontario. Barrie (I think) used it for operations for the longest time.
When Fleetnet came in, it negated the need for PTAC.

I heard a crew the other night getting ready to transport a patient to a different hospital that was way out of their normal area. The dispatcher told them that once they reached a certain geographical point they would need to switch to "PTAC". I don't know if that freq was going to be 149.605 or if it is just named the same under the Fleetnet system...

In Ottawa, PTAC was used as a fallback after MOH went to Fleetnet.
It is probably still operating, though I have not heard anything lately.
Once in a while, I would hear a repeater tail which indicated it was
still there. Just about everything else from the old system seems
to have been decomissioned, except paging and PCOM.

Mike: Are those still in use , inspite we use Fleetnet now a day ??
150.1000Mhz is still in use however 149.6050Mhz is pretty much abandoned. I'd still keep it in since many CACC's might have left the equipment in place in case of problems with Fleetnet.

Enabled or not, PTAC isn't programmed into any of the ambulances, at least Zone 1 or 2. PCOM (150.100) is - twice. PCOM and PCOM N. One is narrowband, but same freq.

That's odd...I wonder how the Ottawa ambulances were able to go on PTAC
when they had Fleetnet problems, within the last couple of years. Possibly
the radios have been updated and PTAC is no longer there...who knows.
Or maybe the Ottawa ones still have it.

Last time I checked, it was still in the Zone 3 radios.

that didn't sound like intermod at my end; so I think it is still up.
That would make me wonder if the Ottawa radios are not potentially
programmed differently from the rest in Zone 2, due to its status of
handling its own dispatch operations.
TAFL search on 149.605 shows quite a few active licenses, many in
Northern Ontario but others in south/west/central part of the province.
Granted, some licenses may "stick" for some time without the frequencies
actually be in use, but it would be no surprise if other areas are still have
active equipment for backup, like Ottawa, or some other emergency use.

Im totally Curious ... I live near the heliport for wellington county and when the medflights come in i get them contacting CACC on 3 different channels any idea whats up with that, or is it just cause they are air units ?

I scan Timmins, Northern Ontario for 4 years now and never heard the PTAC being used.

PTAC would only be used in a mass-emergency when main communications along with the Fleetnet have been knocked out, amature radio ops as well as emo and provicial emergency communications would spark up and pcom and ptacs would be used to address calls and to patch through to hospitals and update on patients and deliveries ... so really ptac wont be used unless theres a massive wide area disastor, nuke melt down, major earth quake, hurricane*yes ontario is at risk for both* and course tornado out breaks that leave multiple communities in ruiens. or "2012 dooms day" but thats to be seen.
On a side note though, yes its also true there are far more systems that can be implimented to deal with such system wide failures. so hold on to cb's, HF, AM and SSB/Shortwave radios you may have and stock up on tubes if youcan find them. Only radios that will survive a distant nuke explosion or EMP are anologe and shortwave/tube style radios. micro-controlers on moder digital radio boards will be whiped in a heart beat in the even of most large scale disastors unless kept in a secure, shock proof container. (not sure if pelican does nuke protection on their military spec cases)

Ambulance in Ottawa/East area used P-Tac and P-Com for a couple of nights back in the spring, I think it was, when Fleetnet was undergoing some extensive maintenance a couple of nights.
