• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Long time lurker seeking advice: (my apologies in advance if the is the wrong place for these questions)

A few hours ago i came across this listing on ebay:
Motorola Radio Programming Computer | eBay

The seller clearly states the legalities, but i'm curious as to the software. Would it be possible to program radios with this computer, and if so would i be violating any laws?

Thank you all in advance for your help. These forums have always been a life saver in the past.

Court order trumps anything else.

ATTENTION DISCLAIMER TO MOTOROLA, eBay AND ANYONE ELSE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THIS LISTING FOR COPYRIGHT/CONTRACT VIOLATION: I am representing a company that has filed for bankruptcy AND BY LAW ALL ITEMS MUST BE SOLD/LIQUIDATED AS THEY ARE. THAT MEANS BY LAW EVEN THOUGH THESE PROGRAM HAVE LICENSE AGREEMENTS A COURT ORDER REQUIRES THE PROPERTY BE SOLD IN ITS PRESENT UNALTERED CONDITION.

I would be interested to see Motorola testify in Bankruptcy court that they object to the judge enforcing federal law. You do realize the money obtained from liquidation would go to pay creditors, and one of them might just be Motorola?

I've seen auctions like this crop up before on Ebay. Ebay has tightened the rules about listings in a lot of areas, and they have cooperated with Motorola on shutting down software sales before.

You will notice that there is no mention of what court or what case in the listing. It's all very vague. If it was legit, full info about the court and the order would be posted or at least referenced so that it could be verified. I think it's a thin and poorly worded attempt to try to trump Ebay's sales rules.

In short, phony. Just my opinion, but I've watched Ebay for at least 15 years and it looks bogus to me. The computer probably exists, but the software is likely older versions. But the whole court thing does not ring legit.

Edit to add: No court is going to knowingly order the sale of items that are clearly illegal to possess or sell. The lab software alone is proprietary and was never released beyond Motorola's own depot.

As the license is non-transferrable (for the licensed SW), it's a moot point. Yes, you can buy the equipment unaltered. That does not give you the license to use the SW, however, and legally you as the buyer must delete it.

Motorola is not preventing them from selling the hardware, but the court cannot grant a license to the purchaser.

And as others have said with respect to the non-licensed SW... The dealer didn't have a license for it. So unless it's Motorola who is in bankruptcy, I too call BS.

It will be interesting to see if Motorola goes after any buyers.

Another issue... if they had a van full of pot, would the court require that to be sold unaltered?

Of course, I guess you could say that the buyer might purchase a license to use the SW from Motorola...

oh jeez, that software is so out of date for radios that haven't been sold/supported in over a decade or more.

that being said, the seller is a moron who is baiting Motorola Solutions to come along and, if they so choose, use Ebay's VERO program to stop such a sale. Motorola could sue them, make the seller's life miserable...

but that would have been the Motorola of 2002 when Patrick Harrington was shark and Ebay was his ocean, and Harold Pick and Co. were hauled into court and sued for selling parts built Astro Sabers/XTS radios.

It's 2015. Ebay is a wild, wild west of counterfeit, stolen and questionable products. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Motorola doesn't seem to care, so why should you or I?

I'm quite sure you could pay for the item without any fear of men in black suits showing up at your house.

DO NOT ASK ME FOR HELP PROGRAMMING YOUR RADIO. NO.
Honestly I also doubt that Motorola cares about lab software for radios that are totally unsupported these days, and are probably very rare to find still in service with any original customer or public safety system.

Jedi or older, who cares? Anything Astro or newer, there may be some desire to enforce. SOME. Depending on what you're doing.

Last I heard, Motorola isn't pursuing any enforcement actions due to their cash flow situation.

Busting up the company and selling part to Google was a dumb idea. In fact, every reorganization and split-off they've done since they split Motorola Semiconductor off (to become OnSemi) was a stupid idea.

Harris is gaining ground, apparently, and Harris is a vertically integrated manufacturer like Motorola USED to be.

I could run Motorola better MYSELF, and I'd do it for a tiny fraction of what their current CEO pulls down. Give me 200K a year and I'd be thrilled to death.

Looking at the provided link. I say it is a fail and lie. Does the pc exist? Yeah. Is it worth 250 bucks? Maybe... if it has usb and serial com support and is not chocked full of viruses, to someone maybe it is worth it. Is the software old, definitely. Is there more he is not showing that exists? Possibly. I know one thing there is 2 items at least by quick glance I noticed a dealer could not have or he would be out of business. Oh wait he is haha. Probably from seperate issues. But a dealer would not have a couple items unless he is fiddling around and was playing with his dealers license and agreements with motorola. So I'm going to have to question if it really came from a dealer with all that is presented. Old news the software is old useless to most or.... we won't go there. I wpuld imagine in a court of bankruptcy attorneys would disclose this important step and the owner of the software be given back to or a specialist would remove the said items prior to auction to not cross any other laws or federal law rulings. If anything the item would be seized prior to liquidation. So you like a used laptop? Cool go for it your buying a decent old laptop with good hardware for parts. Cough. Sorry my throats dry.

After drinking hot black thick coffee I looked at the other listings. Seems more to me of a auction winner with most of the items and radio hoarder/fanatic. The pc I'm sure was his. Unless the radio shop magically came into the future to sell liquidation in a 80s 90s court arena I'd say if it was a radio shop no wonder they went out of business. It isnt. Was a collector, radio nut who won auctions and mamma finally made him clean out the closet to recoup the money or he moved onto his latest, astro scandal specials. Go for the bid your buying a used laptop. I have a old inspiron 8000 and it runs good still after being through endless moves, drops, being stolen once, battery falls out, having coffee knocked over it by a furry friend or slept on by the furry friend it still runs flawless. Decent laptop your bidding on for basic use. If he had any of those mts 2000s in model 2s I wouldn't mind playing the auction for the displays or any parts. Not into the model 1s and already got a couple.

I'd settle for 110 thousand a year could I be your infrastructure manager? I'd be thrilled rolling around in a tub of brand new apxs until terminated.

Who cares about Motorola and their stupid software license. I know we are not supposed to condone illegal activities on this forum, but I hope the Ebay auction goes through and the laptop is full of late version software that gets freely distributed and Motorola spends millions spinning their wheels trying to track it down with no success.

Its come to the point where Motorola places misuse or unauthorized distribution of their software above murder or other heinous crimes. Imagine how much better their products would be if the money wasted on keeping their precious software locked up was put back into engineering and design.
Imagine how many more customers they would have if the programming software was offered at no cost to support the radio sale like most companies.

I would love to see people with large collections of Motorola software make thousands of copies, place them in various public places then post the locations anonymously on radio forums (not this one) and spread the love. I of course do not own any Motorola software and would never do that, but would like to see it happen some day....
