As a reminder to all, Charlotte Fire Department started a holiday tradition several years ago with one of the Battalion Chiefs reading a story on Christmas Eve and stations chimed in for a time. It has evolved into multiple Santa sightings and was added to VIPER SWCALL just a couple years ago as Alarm's gift to the folks in the state.

Hopefully someone in the know will share what time they start, I think my failing memory says around 7-8pm on Christmas Eve. It is well worth the time you spend listening to this touching broadcast.

It has grown to include greeting from many various first responder agencies across the state and has become a long standing tradition. You can listen on NC VIPER SWCALL talkgroup 52255 if you are in North Carolina, or on the Broadcastify Calls platform at the link below.

Side Note: While this does happen on VIPER, I felt it was more appropriate in the NC thread rather than the VIPER thread to be seen by a larger audience, it is more about Christmas than VIPER.

Check out their FB page to get additional information. It's really an amazing time to listen to the retired fire chief who runs it, and to hear all of the agencies that check in.

It is also on VIPER SW CALL TG 52255, listen on there and you won't miss it. The Facebook page doesn't mention a time but indicated it will be earlier than normal.

Might make a VScanner for this on my WS1088, just set up with that TGID and nothing else. Nice little project to get done before the night of. :) Plus that way every year I could just switch to that VScanner and be all set.

On the statewide calling channel, what happens if there are no affiliated radios on the tower monitoring that TGID? Does the signal still go out because it's statewide calling, or does VIPER not transmit the call because there are no affiliated radios on that tower monitoring that TGID?

The SW Viper TGs are all monitored by dispatch centers throughout the state, so there is always a radio affiliated in all areas, as long as you can recieve Viper there is an affiliated radio.

Consoles integrated directly into the core do not require an affiliation to an RF site. If there is no radio on SW Call on a site, traffic will not be passed. I recommend tuning into a live feed if you're concerned and listen to your scanner at the same time. If you hear traffic on both, then that's great. If not, then you're the victim of a county using integrated consoles or a very non-festive area.

All that being said... This is a popular occurrence so there's a good chance someone will be listening to SW Call in your area.

Thank you for correcting that, what I thought was incorrect and now I know.

Make sure you tune in every night to 3.916 MHZ LSB (1900 Central) for the Jolly Old Elf himself. Listening to the kids talking to Santa is what I call radio magic.
