Time to check in

Since I'll be moving to NC in a few weeks, it seemed like a good time to drop in and say hello.

We'll be in Henderson County and I listen mostly to law enforcement stuff. Got my BCD996T all programmed and ready to go. Anxious to monitor the VIPER system!

Was last down there in late 2010 and got to do a little monitoring but didn't have time to get real familiar with the system.

I've got a long history with NC. Been visiting down that way since I was a kid and always loved it. Got relatives near Hickory. Very happy to finally be moving there.

Moving to the Raleigh area

Dan from CT
(not originally a Yankee so maybe I don't have to move to Cary)

Run some feeds up in CT, mostly have older Motorola equipment. Some Kenwood which I really like. Assortment of scanners. Enjoying getting into DSD for decoding.

Volunteer EMS almost 30 years.

Looking to move down here somewhere where they don't encourage one to crawl across the town line before calling 911. And some place looking for a Sunday organist and with a robust Rotary Club.

Enjoying learning about the area by listening to all the feeds in the area. Always enjoyed the people I've met in central/west NC. Very efficient and crisp public safefy radio protocol down here.

Will check in more officially when I get down here....just beginning the looking process!

Hello :)

I've lurked here for a few years, guess it's time to formally come on board...

I'm Jim, in Hillsborough. Been a ham since 2001, used to be big into 6m DXing on the tail end of the last cycle. Other than Field Day, I haven't done much with radio since 2004; college, work and stuff. Just now getting to the point where I can rebuild my shack and get back on the air for real. :)

Definitely going to be adding a digital scanner in the new setup...the last time I listened to public safety, VIPER was still over the horizon, lol.

Nick from Jacsksonville/Onslow County

Using my RS Pro106 scanner for about two years now.
Retired U.S. Navy
Listen mainly to Police & Sherrif radio traffic, VIPER but have EMS, Fire, Camp Lejeune, MSAS New river programmed into my scanner.
Travel through Onslow, Lenoir, Greene Counties to teach EMS on various weekends.

I would like to learn more about Milair. We get alot of heavy air traffic. Anyone able to tell me what bands they typically use for militray aircraft in my area? Will my Pro 106 pick them up? I've have tried scanning using "Aircraft" pre programmed search but get nothing. Once in a while, I will get an overhead civilian aircraft coming in to the county airport. Do I need to change Modes? AM/FM/au? What is au anyway? auto?

388.0 UHF-AM is the universal military guard/emergency channel. Remember, all air comms are AM for close range aeronautical en route, tower, and AFOS. The military also uses satellite and HF USB, most of which is either encrypted, encoded, or both. (ie, the notorious foxtrot broadcasts from Mainsail, Crystal Palace, Skyking, and Skybird.)
