Ok, here it goes, I have been trying to get this system working all weekend long and I am a little frustrated, Here is the deal, I have a Uniden BC 796D scanner. The system is APCO Common Air Interface Exclusive. Project 25 UHF. I have done everything that the owners manual has said to do and nothing happens, I think the problem is the scanner is locked onto the control channel and not picking up the voice channels, I have no problem getting Loudoun county Whch is APCO smart 800 digital trunking system. but for some reason I can not get Berkely county, I use software to program the system, Base 1 I put in 452.000 space 12.5 offset 380, Base 2 460.000 space, 12.5 offset 570, the frequncies are as follows, control channel (red) 460.1625, voice channels (blue) 460.2375, (black) 460.3625, 460.6375, 452.8750, 453.7500, The scanner is set to UHF APCO 25 system,, What am I doing wrong? I have anouther analog scanner and I can pick up the control frequency, also can listen to the fire department simlcast on that scanner as well and know what I did is not working because the fire dept said they would notify PD about an incident and I never heard anything, any tips would be welcome. Thanks Tom e-mail me at tadsit2000@yahoo.com

I am using the software that came with the scanner, digital software is what they call it, thanks for the reply, I am not even 100% sure this scanner will work with this system. Although I am 90% sure it will, just not real clear.

First of all you need a different scanner like a BCD396T or 996. That 796 is not capable of monitoring it.

Ok that is what I was starting to think, which means that I will get anouther scanner, I need a nouther one anyway because I live in the Pan handle of West Va on the state line with Maryland and Virginia, and with all the digital trunking agencies that I monitor, and only one agency per bank I am quickly running out of banks anyway, One question, does the BCD996, do more than one agency per bank?

Time to get into a different mentality with these new scanners with dynamic memory. Depending on how many frequencies or talkgroups you have, you can literally have hundreds of 'banks'. I have created about 120 system files, the majority of those are always present in my scanner. The others I add when traveling to those locations.

These systems include every trunked public safety within about 100 miles of Washington, D.C. and numerous commercial trunked systems. Other 'banks' would be a conventional system that contains hundreds of various analog non-trunked freqs that are relatively local. The conventional 'banks' have 10 subbanks. Mine is broken down as such as FD dispatches, VDOT, power companies, freqs used at Dulles airport, local TV/Radio media, and other stuff. I have another conventional bank/system just for VSP which can be divided up by each division. Within these subbanks there really isn't much of a limit for how many freqs you can have, I limit mine to 100 freqs.

The only real limit is a combined total of 6000 talkgroups and frequencies. I believe these are refered to as memory blocks in the scanner view part of the software. I have 1748 unused memory blocks with 76% of the memory being used.

Go the the Uniden site and download the owner's manual and software for the 996. That will really help to understand how these things can be programmed.

I use a Bearcat 796D scanner and have no problems with listening or it scanning the WV systems or others. Since I don't have a computer (I use MSNtv 2 instead) I manually programmed the system. Perhaps doing the programming on that bank manually will do the trick. FWIW, I only programmed the N Mountain tower (Berkeley Co) since I figured the others were too far away to listen to here.

Did you go by the owners manual to program it? and did you enter the user group ID's? Wher do you live? I live in Charles Town, can I clone your scanner? Thanks Tom

Hi Tom,

Ok, here is step by step (or close to it) the way I programmed mine (with help from others who posted here).

Select "Menu"

Scanner option "2" trunk

Select bank (mine is 1)

Trunk type "on"

Option 4 (type 2 UHF)

Base frequency 1: 453mhz
space 12.5
offset ch. 380

Base frequency 2: 460mhz
space 12.5
offset ch. 570

Exit thru the menu options

Select 2, trunk channel, (ie, the channel you want the first channel of the system want programmed. I started with ch. 001)

Enter the frequencies, advancing a single channel. (FWIW I never seen the control channel operate other than the primary one... 460.1625mhz.)

Then go back to the menu screen, and choose #3 "talk groups" and go thru the process of alpha tagging.

I put the EMS talkgroups in list 1-1 (I'm thinking when more counties come online, they will be using these talkgoups as well.)

I put the FD dispatch & tac TGs in list 1-2.

In list 1-3 is the PD & Sheriff Office TGs, along with the misc. groups.

In list 1-4 I put in the "private" Tgs of the Berkeley fire companies. When I run out of space as counties are added this will be moved or deleted from my scanner.

After you finish alpha tagging, go the "Menu" selection again and choose 6 for "ID tag". This is where you will alpha tag each list in the bank (such as EMS, Berkeley Fire & MFD, Berkeley SO & MPD, Berkele fire private).

One thing to note, this system will likely one day outgrow the 796's capicity of alpha tagging & storing for ID Scanning. After all, with just one county online, I have used 4 of 10 available lists.

Jefferson County may end up with TGs for each town (where as now everybody talks on chs 1 & 4). And the fire department will likely have multiple tac TGs. (Although Berkeley has 4, only 2 are used.)

The less populated counties to the west I will combine into 1 list each.

Steve
