Is the replacement ACARS a digital mode, what's the difference between them?
There’s an IP based version of ACARS and other technologies I’m not familiar with.

If you’re on a major flight path you should get data fairly often. Put the ACARS frequencies in a bank, set mode to DATA and scan just those for a hour or so. You’ll hear the buzz and the message, if decoded, will be listed in the Message Log. It saves up to 10 messages. I turn on my GPS, but I’m not sure it’s required to RX.

VDL Is being rolled out and it is this that the Alinco cannot receive. It will still however receive traditional ACARS messages if set up correctly.Despite some bugs that were originally in the firmware, you should not have any issues receiving ACARS.I"ve received messages from aircraft over 200 miles away.

I got it to work, see the messages in the log, no idea what it all means though😁...

I’ve only had mine a few days and have really enjoyed it. I’ve been interested in one since I heard about it a couple of years ago, but waited to buy until the firmware and software upgrades were made available for the US version.

I expect there will be further firmware and software updates in the future, albeit slow. HRO has listed spare battery, desk charger, AA battery case, soft case, and spare antenna. I think that’s all the accessories for the radio.

Ordered those, except for the spare antenna...

Can any owner email Alinco and ask if they plan on updating the firmware so it can read the new format? Be curious what they will say about this. Am researching this radio but sucks no record capability.

So far so good, the display is really cool and battery life seems excellent.

It receives my local NOAA frequency (162 .550 MHz) well with the stock antenna. That's kind of a crude test I use since it's a weak, scratchy signal for me.

Emailed Alinco to ask about possible upgrade software to decode VDL. 1st response was it can decode analog ACARS. Asked if they will upgrade to cover VDL. Said they will contact alinco HQ in japan for an answer. I don't know much about ACARS decoding but if airlines switch to VDL, this receiver ACARS decoding will be over. As soon as I get an answer, will post response.

I doubt it will be able to decode VDL.

I want to see what they say. Probably need to buy a new one if they build it to decode VDL, if they are allowed. Been looking at this receiver but why buy it if some of the features don't work.

Ok, my original battery is broken, but now I think my internal loudspeaker is fried, too.
