Not sure about the exact circuit, but the P25 digital>audio converter isn't it...

The D/A integrated circuit is but a small part of the whole circuit.

The real action happens inside the DSP. It is a standalone specialized microprocessor that was developed specifically for audio applications.

The firmware upgrades for the scanner are installed inside this part.

Hope this short explanation helped...

dsp 1.4 Fix?

1.4 did give me more trouble on LAPD until i switched from "Not Trunked" to "Motorolla" now it seems fine. Is this the cure for the digital burst issue?

DSP 1.3 upgrade

I recently downloaded and installed the DSP 1,3 upgrade in my Pro 96 and 2096 scanners. The difference is like night and day. The loud squelch noise bursts are all but gone. The missed transmissions are all but gone. I can finally use the scanners for the purpose I purchased them for, which was to monitor the Detroit fire System. They work great now.

Question. Would I get any further benefit from installing the DSP 1.4 upgrade. I had seen some negative comments on the 1.4 upgrade, so I only did the 1.3, which seems to have solved my problems.

I would strongly urge anyone having problems monitoring the detroit system, to download and install the DSP 1.3 upgrade, from the Radioshack website. It is free, and only takes a few minutes. You do need to buy the cable to connect your scanner to your computer.

DSP 1.4 is the same as DSP 1.3 except it fixes a small bug they induced which caused some problems on weak signals.

1.4 didn't help with the motorboating on the Baltimore system, but it didn't hurt, either...I didn't bother backflashing the PRO-96...

I downgraded to factory dsp 1.2 and motorboating miraculously disappeared in Talbot Co, MD. After my initial upgrade to dsp 1.4 it was getting so bad that 1 in 5 transmissions were solid noise.

Due to a small bug introduced in v1.3 there are times when a weak transmission would not "trip" the digital to analog decoder so it would be all digital sound. V1.4 simply fixes that bug.

1.4 no more

I was curious and updated factory 1.2 to the 1.4 and it makes decoding worse. I hope someday they offer a firmware that really does something.. I hope they can handle rebanding when that day comes. 1.4 makes my scanner work like a uniden. Just kidding, i never tested a uniden except my 2026 that says uniden on the circuit board and Radio Shack on the face.

I had already posted something in another thread about this. I am wondering if anyone here is using this on the Minnesota ARMER system and how well it is working for them.

Two other things to help reduce the noise:

-would a mobile 800 mHz gain antenna used in the house help or is more signal not helpful?

-can the user simply hit SCAN to have it "try again" when it gets the digital noise?

Not if the problem is caused by multipath distortion from simulcast towers. (I think this is what causes so many problems on my local TRS)

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't

Exactly, I am pretty sure that this is the very problem. My neighbors friend asked me to help him with his PRO-96 last night. I stopped over and brought my GRE PSR-500 and my Motorola XTS5000. I entered 150 talk groups in his PRO-96 while he listened to my Motorola and GRE. When I was finished he told me he was going to return his PRO-96 and buy either a Uniden Bearcat BCD396 or a GRE PSR-500!

He won't get a noticable improvement with a different scanner - he needs a directional antenna pointed at the closest tower.
