It's in the Lee Co Sheriff budget this year to go to the new P25 radio system. My guess would be the entire county public safety services will be encrypted within the next 1-2 years... :-(

so i guess i'm going to be in the dark when i move to lehigh acres during this year - go figure. while i like monitoring pd stuff, i think it would really stink not being able to hear fd and ems. i actually had heard that the county system that was already in place was top notch. there goes that dream. oh well cant win em all.

There should be plenty to listen to for awhile. Here's a quote from the original newspaper article..."Stadtler and Michael Bridges, the county's deputy director of public safety, estimated the first changes will happen in Cape Coral and Pine Island by December 2008. That will be the first phase of the project. The rest of the county will follow in an additional two phases that should be completed by 2010". Looks like they are running about 3 years behind schedule. The Cape Coral and Sanibel/Pine Islands project is just now ready to go digital encrypted. The Lee Co Sheriff department is the biggest user and it's in this years budget to start joing the new radio system. I don't think they have a grant? I wonder where the money will come from?

I think they just encrypted Cape Coral Dis1, Cape Coral Dis2, and Cape Coral Teletype today 01/19/2011 at 7:30AM. Reason why I'm saying that is, I was up at 4 in the morning and those two dispatch and teletype channel's came in fine. Now it sound's like mice running around. On the other-hand, Cape Fire works fine still. Also the scanner knows the right ID#, but like i said it sound's like mice running around. I can believe this S***, the city is spending a 8 million F****** dollars on this, not to mention the fact that the city is already going bankrupt. Don't make know scene.

Sounds like PD has gone to full encription to me as well. I'll bet FD follows soon. As far as the talk groups... they're pretty much the old talkgroup divided by 16. Example: Fire Dispatch TG 18896 / 16 = 1181. So the new TG is 1181. It's pretty much like that accross the board. Some don't fit... I think these are new TG's. I've been looking for Sanibel PD and FD that I think has moved to the new P25. They're just not busy enough to track down.

I went back and listened to my recorded feed today. You could hear dispatchers having crews switch to the encrypted channels just after 7 am. One of the last comms I heard in the clear was... a crew asked if this was permanent... and the dispatcher replied it was for 2 days. So maybe this is just a test? A short reprieve?

As I continue to lock out all the encrypted talkgroups to see what's left... can you believe Cape Coral Police CID is in the clear! Somebody made a boo boo...

Thought I would post a few data screen captures of the new P25 system running on the PRO96com monitoring software...

All of Lake County has gone to encrypted in 2010. Sucks big time for sure. This encludes the fire depts. The new system came to around 32-million big ones. But get this..someone over looked the fine print on the contract. The cost to maintain this system cost some 1.5-million. Talk about the cover up on this item.Lot's of finger pointing but no names came to light. The County Commissioners do not want to talk about this issue.
One idea to cover the cost was to take more money off the top of the traffic tickets that the towns and cities issue. Well that did not set to well with the smaller towns. The next one was to cut back the hours of some 40 low wage employes. They still came up short $500,000 the last I heard.

Meh, the economy in Florida is tanked. You're not missing much except warmer weather and part time/reduced benefits or minimum wage jobs. Back on topic, some sheriffs know the value of engaging the public and keeping them involved (they elect him or her). There shouldn't automatically be a connection between going to P25 and going encrypted unless the sheriff or chief has said so.

The Cape Coral police chief in a meeting 2 weeks ago with the local news media stated all of Cape Coral police and fire will be 100% encrypted by April 2011. He also said that would include Pine Island and Sanibel. News media have been given a web link so they can monitor dispatch only with a 7 minute delay.

Once they get their encryption toys, they're going to use them. They feel it's a status thing. There was no reason for the "State" to encrypt everything either(or anything for that matter). I hope Charlotte doesn't go digital. They have a fairly new Mot II trunk that is working quite nicely so there is no valid reason to waste more taxpayer's money. Never mind me, just the ramblings of an old geezer.
