• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

It's a used radio and I switched to a 4' tunable Firestik with a spring and quick disconnect, so the antenna is now 2'+ above the roof of the jeep. The swr's show 1.1:1. I do know that it was checked over to make sure that everything works as it should.
i never got good results with antennas lower than the highest point on the vehicle. height is might.
even with top causes radical vswr and the lower the worse

The beauty of FS is that they are top-loaded, however.

Been using them on various vehicles for various applications for 30+ years and have found they are the best compromise for when I can’t run my Predator or 1/4 wave whip.

I like the old school look as well. I also like that there are switches and buttons for most things. But I could never fit something like that in my Subaru. Unfortunately, I have to run remote mount radios in it and there are precious few these days.

Davidbt you have a radio on both sides of the console? so how do you slide the seat up to get into the back seat???
you must have to remove a radio every time someone wants to get into or out of the back seat?

I don't have a back seat. The little radio on the driver's said does not interfere with folding the seat forward. The passenger side yes it does. The jeep is for off-roading, not family trips.

The QT40 is harder to use than the QT60 besides having a worthless S-meter.

As to space for a radio the son and I rigged a seatback mount (fabric MOLLE panel) for his 4-Runner. Used a WALCOTT radio bag for the PRESIDENT McKinley & KL203 and it wasn’t hard from there (no pics).

KES-5 speaker under drivers seat.

Power thru firewall under console to PD-75. NEG to L-rear seat bolt.

A handful of zip ties or Velcro strap to secure (make removal & reinstall easy).

PL-150 with SIRIO 5k on roof.

2019 basic state-of-the-art AM/SSB.

A shirt hanger attachment for the headrest with lightweight jacket and it was completely out of sight.

I like where the radio is, I can reach it without to much effort. I can also hear great, it has a very good speaker. I personally feel the controls are more intuitive to use than my QT-80.

I beg to differ. First and foremost, the meter is fine, and you shouldn't be trying to look at it while driving anyway. As for the controls, QT40/Ares2 wins hands down. Better yet are the 5555/HS4/ss6900v. I bought a used 5555n2 (QT60) to play with, and it's my least favorite of these new radios. The QT60/5555n2's controls suck. When switching bands, rather than turn a knob you have to hit the band button like 11 times to get back to band D. Annoying. Same when switching modes. Multiple button presses. Annoying. Also the freq counter doesn't adjust when you slide the clarifier. Annoying. It's the least user friendly of these radios IMHO.

So far, that's how I feel about the QT80 that I put in my truck, though I haven't spent a lot of time with either radio. @slowmover has said before though, set it and forget it. It does seem to me that the QT40 is easier to adjust, and could be done on the fly if needed.

The "set it and forget it" theory doesn't work for everybody when it comes to menu driven multi-band / multi-mode radios. I for one constantly jump between AM / FM and SSB on multiple bands. Radios with knobs and switches on them are quick and easy to adjust and are more true to the cb and export radios from the past. There's a reason many people will spend the extra $200 for a Stryker 955 even though its internally the same as the old QT60/5555n2. Ease of use with knobs and switches.

You ain’t on the road @WSAC829.

Too much “into the menu” on QT40 that’s handled by front panel controls (by touch) on QT60.

Mode & Scan are E-Z, and a worthy S-Meter to help distinguish what’s Skip and what isn’t past its use with local traffic receding or advancing.

Even this difficult PRESIDENT Lincoln 2 V3 is easier once one knows location. No peering at ridiculously tiny menu screen.

You want QT40, have at it. I’d trade one away in an instant. As worthwhile as a Cobra 29 (junk).

Such as? Since you don't own a QT40 I'd like to hear how it's soooo menu driven. Other than Rodger beep on/off everything else is on the knobs and switches. You're lack of owning and using one makes your statements bunk.

QT40 has mic gain on a knob. QT60 does not. Requires scrolling through the menu.
QT40 has a knob for band selection. QT60 has 11 button presses to get back to band D from E.
QT40 has easy NRC adjustment from a switch. QT60 requires scrolling through the menu.
QT40 has easy echo adjustment from a switch. QT60 requires scrolling through the menu.
QT40 has easy mode selector via a knob. QT60 requires 5 button presses to scroll through the modes.
QT40 has easy 1 switch to access WX. QT60 has 2 button presses to access WX.
Both have Volume, Squelch, RF Gain, RF Power, Channel selector and clarifier as knobs.
Both have NB as switch / button press.
Both have scan from Button press (QT40 via mic channel up/down).
Both have 10k on front.
QT40 has better 4 pin mic connector. QT60 has crummy RJ45 connector.

I don't see where the QT60 wins here. As i said in post #31 switching bands, and switching modes suck on the QT60. Very annoying. The lack of frequency readout changing when sliding the clarifier also sucks. Even though the QT40 doesn't have a "real" frequency display, it at least follows the clarifier in real time and displays it.

Again, i OWN all of these radios. I have real world use and testing with these. Not just a random opinion of something i haven't owned or used like you. You cant crap on a radio you haven't used. Try again.
