WS1080 vs GRE PSR500

Just curious how does WS1080 compare to the PSR500 as far as digital trunk voice quality? I have a PSR500 and it does very well with digital trunking . Only problem it does not handle P25 phase 2. I am assuming the WS 1080 will handle that. I also just got a HOME PATROL 2 but not very impressed with its digital trunk quality. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Well on a P25 conventional system I tested ... the PSR500 sounded well pretty bad. My PSR800 was much much better. The PSR800 is probably very much like the Whistler 1080 for it's performance.

The PSR500 sounded digital .. maybe it just needs a tweak .. but I am only using the PSR500 for Unitrunker duty so really I don't care.

Another update of the WS 1080. I went to Evansville this weekend and used the scanner on a EDACS system and everything was good with that. Worked good on the SAFE-T system, also was good on the conventional stuff. This radio so far is working great, just waiting for the real test in the near future when the county I live in switches to the 700mhz P25 Phase 2 system. This is the real reason why I bought this radio, hopefully it works just as good with this system.

Any further updates on how the WS 1080 is working for you? I really enjoyed your updates as I just sold (2) PRO-197 scanners and am in the market and want to go HH this time.

Small update with antenna usage and the WS 1080, I have been using the Diamond RH77CA, RS 800Mhz and recently the stock one that comes with it. What really surprises me is how well this radio does with the stock antenna, never even tried using it at first until 3 days ago. It performs good as a overall antenna, then just using the other specific antennas, going to keep using it for a couple more days, may just use it always. The WS 1080 is my everyday radio now, I still use my PSR 500 and Pro 95 when things get busy. So glad that I waited for WS 1080 to come out, this radio just works.

Any further updates to how the stock antenna worked for you?

Whistler is currently making RadioShack scanners , previously Grecom made the digital until they went under . The analog scanners were and still are made by Unidentifiable . I happen to work for RS . I currently have a whistler 1080 & a uniden 396xt .

The Radio Shack Pro-649 and the Radio Shack Pro-650 are both analog scanners, and they are both made by Whistler.

Have any of you tried to change the default step sizes within the USA Band Plan? I've been reading 1080 users guide up on marksscanners, and other than the FlexStep feature which seems to allow very small incremental tuning, I'm not seeing a feature in the menu subsets to change default step sizes. Example:
The 225-380 Mhz Military Aircraft band, can the step size be changed from the default 25Khz to 50Khz or 100Khz?

Just purchased a new WS1080 for $400 shipped. Will arrive Friday and I am looking forward to the new toy. Oregon State Police switched to P25 phase 2 and it will be nice to hear everything again.

Yep. $414 shipped or best offer. I offered $400 shipped and he went for it. Great deal. If it arrives Friday, it will be very fast shipping too.

Do NOT purchase a scanner from this guy.

It was listed on Ebay as new, unused. It arrived in just a couple of days. I took the scanner out of the box and it is obviously used. No protective film on the display and the display was scratched up. Everything else in the box looked new. Manuals, antenna, etc. Like someone just slipped the new scanner from it's plastic bag and put the used one in.

I have returned it for a refund. What a bummer.

Remember on EBay .. you are not buying the product .... you are really buying the Feedback score.

If you have someone with thousands of positive feedback reviews .. you are probably good. If someone has 4 .. then it is very suspect.

As you found out ... Ebay is only good where people have something to lose when they screw you.

The old saying "If it is too good to be true .. it probably is" applies here.

I think that should be a red flag .. if you are getting something at a much lower price than the going rate .. I would be very wary.

I did not buy my WS 1080 from Ebay, however when I did get mine and took it out of box it looked like just how you described. It did not even look like it had a protective film on it and was scratched up, I was ready to send it back. Upon closer inspection the unit did have a protective film, it just fit on screen so perfect that it appeared one was not even on it. After I took it off screen the screen looked fine.

update

Any further updates on how the WS 1080 is working for you? I really enjoyed your updates as I just sold (2) PRO-197 scanners and am in the market and want to go HH this time.

The only new update I can give is a thumbs up. This WS1080 has worked fantastic since day 1 of getting it, always doing a little tweaking with my scan list and scan sets. The stock antenna seems to be decent in my area, still alternate with the RS 800mhz and the Diamond RH77CA.
Thing I like about the WS 1080 is that it worked good right out of the box, no tweaking of anything to try and make it sound better. Not having a keypad is no problem, I can control everything on the the scanner easily with just a thumb while held in hand. I get great battery life out of Panasonic Eneloop Pro's charged in a PowerEx MH-C9000. Totally happy with this radio, goes along good with my PSR 500 when things get busy on the radio. My WS 1080 is used almost every day and have not had 1 single issue with it.

I'm pretty sure I checked well for that protective film. I used my fingernail on the edge to see if I could peel anything up. I'd sure feel stupid if I missed that but I'm pretty sure it wasn't on there. Wish I still had it so I could check again. Oh well......

Time to shop for another one.
