Got a Pro-164 from Radio Shack.

PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner - RadioShack.com

And this antenna, hooked up to the top of my car:

Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna - RadioShack.com

Driving around STLCO a lot, and wanted to know:

What now? What's good listening?

Listening to STLCO PD District 2 (my area) - but they're kind of boring. Maybe a "shots fired" or something at best in the far north.

Looking for ambulances, as they seem to speak less code (which I dont know yet), and more openly.

Or just anything you would recommend to a totally beginner in the St. Louis County area with the set up mentioned.

Try listening to the are FD's

The database in RR lists the frequencies. I used to live in West St.Louis County a long time ago and was hooked on scanning when the state of the art was scanners that had to have a crytal for each frequency you wanted to scan. Also back in the day they had multiband AM/FM/VHF Hi tunable radios and that is also how I listened. You have so much of an advantage with the technology and information resources available. I encourage you to learn everything you can and never loose your curiosity.

I get my frequencies from:

AWH: Main St. Louis Frequency Index (Missouri)

And what would you recommend in terms of a digital scanner?

Have put in a few frequencies (EMS, local fire, police, airports).

But nothing that's really kept my interest for a long long time.

Are there non public service type stuff to listen to?

I'm not sure about the lingo yet, this is very new to me and I'm just groking the major concepts.

Sorry I just saw this. The digital that I know of in the area is STL City, O'fallon MO, St. Charles County Sheriff's Dept and Ladue. I really like the Sheriff's dept for some reason.

You can post what you hear on here and I'll tell you what it means.
