To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Thank you for the instructions and reference to DMR-MARC to search for repeaters. I attached an image of my programming in D1N for the 147.105 DMR repeater.
I get to select Time Slot 1, 2 or auto in KPG-D1N.
So if I am entering a DMR channel and it has multiple time slots and group calls... Do I enter a new entry in the zone/channel information if I want both timeslots available to listen to? Or is this all selectable from the radio screen once a DMR frequency is set and tuned to?
I don't have any options in DMR conventional to set Group Call to 1, 3, 13 or 2 in your reference above.
I'm very new to DMR as you can see.

Thank You

Looking for help troubleshooting a NX-5700. It is experiencing very random power cycles during transmit. To date, I have yet to be able to reproduce these power cycles on demand. But I have personally witnessed and others have reported multiple instances of radio powering cycling after pressing PTT.

This is what I know:
  • 5700 - VHF analog-only
  • Happens top and bottom band (150-156)
  • Multi-head setup
  • Power constant 13 plus volts at all times
  • Swapped antennas and checked antenna connections multiple times, I have not checked SWR as the radio is in a remote location and haven't had meter available
  • I have not updated the firmware and I don't know what version the radio is on. I installed and programmed 18 mos ago
  • Power cycles only on transmit, possibly after the radio has been powered on for more than 20-30 minutes
  • I have checked connections to decks, everything appears to be in order.
Taking the radio to a dealer involves hours or removing from the vehicle and extensive work installing a temporary, so trying to avoid if there are other troubleshooting measures I can take first.

I read your response and it sounds like under voltage during TX or Overheating
1. Independently verify voltage during TX by multimeter
2. Possibly overheating. What’s the region/environment?
2. Update firmware to 3.11 (Current Release)
3. Absolutely verify SWR before any more transmissions. (Stay under 2.0) with 1.0- 1.5 as ideal

I haven't programmed a Kenwood but you will need to set timeslots not Auto and somewhere there will be a spot to identify talkgroups.

Agree on checking SWR, but given the radio performance when it doesn't power cycle, I don't suspect it is a problem. We are pretty remote and radio is hitting far repeaters that our other radios don't hit. That said, it should be checked.

I have monitored voltage, and power lugs under full load and when transmitting never dips anywhere near 13.0 V.

Power cycles are seldom and random but annoying because they seem to occur at the most inopportune time.

It has happened from mid-winter to now, it power cycles (when it occurs) instantaneously when hitting transmit and not during any length of transmission.

It would seem firmware update would be an option, but I have not seen mention of this symptom by anyone else.

I would lean toward an antenna connection issue, perhaps one that comes and goes. I've seen Kenwoods power cycle on PTT when reflected power was too high (someone put a 90* adapter and an HT antenna on an 8180) and it didn't like it depending on the antenna orientation.

You've got to do the basics: power and antenna, before worrying about anything else.

AES-256 secured
We had the same issues with our XTL5000s and the crappy glass mount antennas. Also dealt with a similar issue with a bad secure board.

Anybody take the plunge yet with the f/w? I've installed KPG-D1N v4 and haven't noticed any changes, about ready to do the f/w.

I mentioned in a separate posting, that the 3k and 5k new versions add DMR Tier 2 Trunking to the mix now.
Tier 3 you have to purchase still, Tier 2 is simplified DMR Trunking (I want to think this is the same form of Hytera XPT) where
you have repeaters stacked and acts like Cap+ or LCP style. I am waiting on Kenwood to come out with the product line for this,
then I will have the papers on it to truly be able to discuss what it is. It was on display at IWCE last year and this year I heard.
You can convert say a small 3 or 4 repeater stack to DMR Tier 2 Trunk with a firmware update, and then you have simple DMR
trunking. Hytera XPT is the same way with their own little knicks and nooks.

More to follow when I get it.

Thanks, I'm now running f/w v4.0 . So far, so good. That being said, I won't be taking advantage of any of the functionality upgrades that you have mentioned. I'm still interested in the change log if you get it.

I have been down the change log road many times. It is not an easy thing. Sometimes I can get the MINOR update info, like .11 recently was only for tier 3 trunking where some functions were added to it. The real meat updates, other than what I posted on the other topic, well, that's about all I can get for information. I just deal with it. But if I do get minor fix information and it is enough to say something, I will kindly pass it along. Other times, it's a fix to a GID issue with nxdn trunking and has nothing to do with Conventional use, yeah, i pass on it.

Enjoy!

I did the V4 firmware/KPG and noticed the new DMR option on KPG. Other than that the only other difference so far I've seen is that the battery green indicator on the screen doesn't change as the batter runs down. Under battery into I can see 20% but the green battery logo on the screen shows 100%.

What is everyone programming the blue Button on the side of the portables for? I was thinking for Bluetooth for programming wirelessly or for GPS... What are some other thoughts?
