Some are "soft" crashes like above. Then I get the big ones that close out the entire UASD application.

Just put mine in the truck today. Things I like initially about this scanner:
-DIN size
-Temporary Lockout
-Audio "Type" on each channel
-Close Call Do Not Disturb
-Uses Same Files as my 396T.
-Front panel earphone and PC jacks
-Ability to see
FREQUENCY (mode 2 display)
I agree with the earlier post, a black trim ring would be nice.
THANKS Paul and UNIDEN, great scanner!!!:D:D:D

Uplink got him a really nice install on that!

Has anyone tried to install theirs in a Ford Crown Vic in the radio slot? I tried to on my 2001 and it wouldn't fit. A/C ducts were in the way.

What windows version is this? I am not experencing the same problem on WinXP. I've been using the Uniden USB-1 cable mostly, but it also works on the DB-9 cable.

Also the information in the 996 UASD file was most likely current last year when they started work on it. If the alternate control channel was not in memory at the time it may not have been known as an active control channel. I'm sure much of the information, including some of the added tower sites, or incorrect tower location GPS data, may need to be updated in the UASD files by now.

By the way do you get any "machine-gunning" on any of your SAFE-T towers?

I am running XP with SP 2 and the latest updates. My guess is it is a memory issue. I have the scanner on manual/hold listing to 1 single talkgroup ID trying to identify it and the application is just ever increasing at a steady rate in memory useage. They are 8k jumps at a rate of every 1 to 2 seconds. I will assume it will crash the application in a few.

I don't get the machine gunning very often.

kokomo:

Contact me off list at popitz@uniden.com. I have a test version that should fix the issue.

It seems to be caused when the PC is unable to keep up with the data stream (very slow PC or other running applications are slowing down the computer).

I'm really starting to like this scanner, the more I use it. I'm finally wrapping my mind around the possibilities of having an almost unlimited number of "banks". Which of course they really aren't. I've even got the Start Up key thing figured out.

About the only thing I don't like is no MUTE function.

I don't have one, but on the BCD396T you can push the menu button and mute the audio. Can that be done on the 996 too?

It would be helpful to have a mute function, but you could hit the menu key.

FYI I just added a couple GPS units that should work with these two radios in the classified section.

Question on users manual:

To quickly store a talk group or frequency on page 49 it says:

"2 Enter the frequency or talk group ID you want to store (press twice to enter hyphens in talk group ID’s). "

What is supposed to be pressed twice to enter the hyphens. (I might be missing it however).

Thanks!

Press the front of your hand to your forehead sharply (at least, that is what the O/M writer is doing, now).

Actually, you press the decimal point twice.

The startup key lets you quickly lock and unlock groups of systems at power up. You assign each system a startup key (SK) from 0-9 (or . if you don't want the system to be affected by startup keys).

When you power up, if you hold down one of the number keys, all systems assigned to that number are unlocked and all systems assigned to other startup keys are locked.

It lets you create "overlays" of systems from different areas that use the same quick keys, for example. You could have your systems set as (and I am making the system names up):
Code:
SK SQK System Name
 1 1 Springfield Police
 2 1 Shelbyville Police
 1 2 Springfield Fire
 2 2 Shelbyville Fire

When you are in Springfield, power up while holding down "1" and the Shelbyville stuff is locked out: SQK 1 now turns on/off Chief Wiggum's boys and SQK 2 turns on/off Springfield Fire.

Scoot over to Shelbyville and power up while holding down "2" and the Springfield stuff will be locked out and Shelbyville will be unlocked. Now 1 while scanning turns on/off Shelbyville Police and 2 does Shelbyville Fire.

If you put the aircraft frequencies, nationwide EMS "hospital" frequencies, etc in systems assigned to SK ".", they will not be affected by the startup key sequence...

Is there any possibly way to assign the same system to different Startup Keys?

That would be neat. For instance if I wanted Bradely County to be on SK 1 and SK 2 so that it is on with different Systems on both keys?
