Hi, first post. Don't know diddley squat.... studying for Technician exam still. Delaware county. Grabbed a few uv-5r's off Amazon last year before I even knew what they were.... oops!
New next door neighbor is a HAM and gave me his old ARRL license manual, so I'm working through it. It's from 2006 though. Glad to be here, excited to learn!
Keep in mind the test questions from that book may no longer be the real ones. Current test questions in the form of practice tests can be found online. Yea, the FCC provides the questions and answers to everyone. :)

Welcome!

I don't know if it is still available, but there is a great book/study guide out there called 'Look Who's Talking' that I have recommended to prospective hams over the years. one of the best comprehensive books I have ever read for technician class testing.

Hello to who ever passes by this thread.. Name here is Ray N8QWS and I am in Geauga County on the Eastern central edge.. I mostly listen to the P-25 MARCS system covering the Eastern half of Geauga and the Western half of Ashtabula counties.. It seems like I am missing a lot of traffic and I am going to have to dive into the programming and figure it out.. May be I have to access it from the State level to get all the control channels..

What radio Ray? Did you program with Sentinel and let it pick every single site in the state of Ohio like it does by default? If so your scanner may be spending time trying to find a control channel where it never will.

Ashtabula has five separate sites to Geauga's single simulcast site. Even if you're just trying to scan those six sites alone you may be spending a lot of time sitting on the control channel of another site for crucial seconds while the other more interesting site has traffic you're missing.

You typically don't want "all of the control channels" - you want as few as possible to hear what you want to hear because the more systems and sites you put into the scanner the more likely you are to NOT hear something you want. Each site you put into your scanner that it can successfully find a control channel for it will spend 2 seconds listening to that control channel. If that is currently 10 or 20 control channels your scanner is spending 20-40 seconds NOT listening to Geauga County at all. Make sense?

I have an SDS200 and yes I used the Sentinel database.. At one time before I had issues with the scanner I did have it programmed properly but I started screwing around with it thinking it was a corrupt database so deleting and clearing and reassembling the data without first just backing up the Micro SD card was pretty stupid.. I must have just stumbled into it before and Having just got it back from repair yesterday I have not devoted the hour or two of head scratching and referencing tutorials yet.. I did do the auto select to at least get something using my zip code but it does have lots of stuff from other counties I don't want.. My son in law is a police officer in several of the towns in my area and I also have several buddies that are volunteer firemen so I had at one time setup the flashing colored light to let me know those departments were on the air.. I still have some lingering issues recovering from the CCP flu but I will get at it Monday morning with a fresh rested mind.. I also might add that my god this scanner is complex compared to my old BC-800 that bit the dust.. 10 years ago it would have been easier so I guess I am saying I am getting old..

On my last trip across I-90 to Erie in August I was surprised at how little radio traffic I was picking up on my Legacy 800. Once I went past Mile Post 212 there were only a few peeps from Lake County. Yet on the South Western edge of Geauga where I live, Ashtabula police and fire and Trumbull County fire are non stop. I have no explanation for that behavior within the I-90 corridor.

One of several places that is like a dead zone in the I-90 corridor.. Mobile with my ham radio the repeater loss in that area is well known.. I live about 15 miles south of that area up on a hill and my problem sometimes is the opposite where so many strong signals tend to make transmitting a pain because I bring up 2 or 3 repeaters at once from home..

I live in Brown County. I mostly monitor Brown Co MARCS, but also listen to Clermont and Hamilton County's. I have a remote receiver (SDR) on the west side of Cincinnati for the MARCS sites in Hamilton Co.
