Grass fires!

Looks like there are some rowdy grass fires brewing today...

I was browsing around the NWS website, looking for long-term forecast info, and noticed some of their radar images showed echoes up to the NW part of the state. They had those echoes circled and noted that they were plumes from grass fires!

And now, both Bethany and Warr Acres FDs just radioed that they are sending units 4 miles north of Crescent on Hwy 74 to fight grass fires. That's a long mutual aid trip, hadn't heard them do that before!

Edit: The radar images with the smoke plumes are not the ones being shown on the usual forecast pages. They are on the "Enhanced Weather Page" - there's a link to that at the bottom of the regular pages.

We have made the ride from Choctaw to Guthrie for mutual aid a few years back. Its definitely been one of those days today, people thinking that just because it snowed that the grass won't burn. Only thing the snow did was make traction a real witch. Tomorrow will probably hold the same type of activity grass fire wise so happy scanning!!!

I've occasionally wondered, as seldom as they (Bethany and Warr Acres) actually have a "good fire", if the full-time firefighters don't sometimes get to wishing for one... "All this nice hardware, and nothing to do with it!"

I can just see the phone call now, "Can we come? Heck yeah, we'll leave right now! Can't wait!"

They have had a couple of decent-sized fires recently, but normally it's nothing but medical calls...

Yea, its been a busy day, Washington County Fire as well as Bartlesville and many rural departments in Washington County have been very busy on multiple grass fires.
I just hope that the pager doesn't go off for anything else.......:roll:

Grass Fires

It's a little known fact but Oklahoma County still provides Bethany, Warr Acres, The Village and Nichols Hills with brush trucks to be used county wide in the event they're needed, like today.

This was Crescent's fire but they basically were sharing command with Cashion and Kingfisher (I know...kinda far for them to be in command)...

Mediflight 3 was up and used for airborne recon. Mutual aid from all over was called in on this one. Besides the Bethany, Warr Acres, The Village and Nichols Hills units, Guthrie, Woodcrest, Oak Cliff, Deer Creek, Twin Lakes, Piedmont and several Garfield County departments assisted. Fire has been contained and most M/A units are released.

Back on New Years Day 2006, Crescent had another good one at the intersection of 74 and 33. I was in charge of a task force on this one and I had, among others, The Village, Warr Acres and Bethany in my crew.....all were great hands and they even had their big structural trucks out there with us. They just want a good fire from time to time so don't hesitate to call them!

I hardly know anyone at Bethany FD now. Twenty years ago I would have said they preferred the quiet, but with all the medicals you might be right about wanting something exciting from time to time.

Sperry had a couple today, Owasso got their hands full on a 20 acre job that could have been much worse at 9000 North Hudson, we ran mutual aid on it. I could see the smoke plume from tulsa, it was probably visible on radar as well.

Well Crescent summoned Cashion for tankers and brush pumpers in the middle of the night last night.....I wonder if the wind shift today is going to cause any problems?!?!?!?!

I'll be on Channel 9 tonight talking about the fire danger and some grant stuff.....stay with News 9 they'll keep you advised.

We had several here in the Stillwater area located by Lake Mcmurtry. Stillwater FD and EMA, Glencoe FD, Perry FD, Sumner FD, and Rock Township FD all worked that one. I could see the smoke plume from the parking lot or my residence.

Owasso Fire just cleared from a Grass fire on 76th St just across the street from Barns Elem.

In Creek County, Mannford, around 5100 S 401st W Ave. Mannford, Silver City and Keystone FD Working a grass fire, now more than square mile involved. Just crossed SH 51. OHP also on Scene.

Just heard Bethany and Warr Acres sending a brush pumper each up to that area. The Bethany dispatcher is who described it as a "huge" grass fire!

Does sound big, though. There are two commands on it, Guthrie on the west and Stillwater on the east. The units responding were told to go to 154.130.

I'm sure I'm too low to actually hear anything from the fire scene - all I've heard so far is some key-clicks!

And another first for me - the weather radio just went off, with a message from Lincoln County emergency management telling those in Sparks, OK to evacuate now due to a wildfire approaching the town.
