Ok I need peoples opinions on this argument im having with a co-worker. Mind you at 2 am we come up with strange topics to debate. My co-worker said its possible to convert a general coverage receiver like the realistic dx100 into a transceiver. I call BS. Whose right? I looked online and cannot find concrete info that it can be done.

Well I'm sure a very talented technician could add all the parts required for transmitting to it if the case had enough room, Basically he would be building a transmitter inside the receiver case. Plus it would now need a lot more power so a bigger PS would have to be added. But if it could be done it certainly would not be cost effective. Yea basically it's BS.

That depends on exactly what you mean by convert. You can theoretically convert anything to something else.

If you mean use the already existing circuitry to handle both transmit and receive, no. There isn't enough circuitry or power to handle both RX and TX.

Could you add a small transmitter section into the DX-100 and make it into a transceiver? As long as the transmitter section is very low power and there is room, possibly yes. Will it work well, no. The zener regulator provides only 9 volts for you to work with and not much in current.

But more so, why would you even bother? The DX-100 is a "Entry Level" general coverage receiver. It is single conversion with poor image rejection and a pretty wide 455 KHz IF. That makes for a good AM band receiver, but its not so good as the frequency goes up. It has a single RF stage to help, but on the high band it is probably pretty deaf.

I could go on about the limitations of the DX-100, but it would be better if you got a better definition of what your friend means by "convert".

Those of us of a mature age may remember the TV show Sergent Biklo. I remember one episode where they converted a broadcast band all American five radio into a transmitter just by moving one wire. Amazing,

I thought so but he is hard headed lol. I have two of the dx-100s and the one thats not working I was goign to use the power supply out of it and the rest are for parts.

With enough time, effort, parts, and knowledge, you can pretty much convert anything to anything else. If you add that the conversion must be practical (generally defined as the time, effort, and expense must be way less than a purpose built item would cost) your conversion of the DX-100 won't make sense. A DX-100 modified so it will also transmit would work worse and cost more than getting a similar age transceiver that will do the job much better.

All good points and it did shut him up lol. I'm not planning on modifying a dx-100. I am planning on building my own transceiver in the near future.
