    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

PD362i DMR call connection issue

I have a simple test with 2 PD362i radios (#1 and #2). The radios work fine as analog devices, the issues appear to be purely in DMR.

A) #1 can initiate a digital call to #2, #2 receives the call and can hear #1. When #2 tries to talk back, #1 either hears nothing or a warbling sound from the speaker.

B) #2 can initiate a digital call to #1. #1 receives the call (LED turns green), but cannot hear anything. Sometimes the LED on #1 shows the call receive indicator for < 1 sec (then the arrows go away), sometimes it does not. Note that when it does show the indicator, it will show "Call End" once the call is disconnected.

Any ideas what might be wrong/how to fix? Is the issue with #1 or #2? I am hoping to know what the issue might be before purchasing the programming software.

DMR radios do need programming, its not optional like on analog. If they are just straight out of box, you probably find they both have the same DMR ID, which will cause issues. Every radio on a net needs an individual ID number. You need the software (which is essentially free but some distributors charge for the distribution costs) and the programming cable. Dependant on the software version of the radios, you may find the software online (I am a different region so couldn't help with that)

Thanks - does the way these are behaving indicate they aren't programmed properly? I do see that both are Radio ID #1, which probably creates all sorts of non-deterministic issues.

It sounds to me like there is nothing wrong with their current programming, they just have NO programming. New out of the box, they come with a few pre-programmed channels but they aren't intended to be usable. Transmitting on any of the pre-programmed ones would also generally be illegal as they arent on any specific frequency. Its not like a blister pack radio that has usable channels, these are licenced radios that require programming before use (even for analog)
Of course without seeing the programming, I can only make an educated guess. Out of box programming would have CH D1, CH D2,CH D3, CH A1,CH A2,CH A3 going from 415 to 425MHz

#2 Make sure there is at least 6.5 ft (2m) feet between the radios when trying to communicate.
#3 Confirm that the RX group lists and TX frequencies are correct in the (latest) CPS to transmit & receive with each other.

Thanks a ton! The real issue is one radio appears to have a failing/defective digital decoder in its transceiver chip. Replaced the Radio, used the same codeplug, and it works great.
