My appreciation to all who post to this forum. I have been a member for quite awhile, but don't believe I have ever posted on RadioReference. I live and work in the Salt Lake Valley and have been scanning for five years. All my knowledge about scanning has come from this forum and the Yahoo 7202 group. (I have posted several pictures on the Yahoo group's site).
I have appreciated all the help through the rebanding process. I believe I speak for a lot of people that my heart sunk when I finally learned last week (through this forum) that the Salt Lake Simulcast site 003 had been rebanded.
In anticipation of taking advantage of holiday sales, specifically the anticipated sale of the Radio Shack Pro-164 scanner this Friday (day after Thanksgiving) for $149.99, I have confirmed with a couple of stores the sale price and increased inventory of this scanner.
I would like to ask for any reviews of this scanner. I have read several different reviews on-line, but I would like to ask a few questions of my own.
1- Is this scanner ready to go 'out of the box', meaning, does the CPU need to be flashed to accept the rebanded control channel(s)? With the Pro-95 that I'm looking to replace, I have programmed in the new control channel and continue to pick-up quite a bit of UCAN traffic. However, of course I don't know what I'm missing. My fear is I buy the Pro-164 and pick up the same traffic I'm receiving on my Pro-95.
2- Is it true that the Pro-164 scans LTR systems. That in and of itself is exciting to me since the Pro-95 does not scan LTR systems. Although, there are not any LTR systems in Utah that I'm aware of, I spend a lot of time in Las Vegas. Most of the major casinos have gone to LTR trunking.
3- In comparing the Pro-95 to the Pro-164, it looks like the Pro-164 has added some features to it over the Pro-95. I compared the buttons between the two and the only changes are the WX button and the Trunk button have switched places. For what I enjoy listening to, the Pro-95 has performed wonderfully for me over the years. Without going to the complicated PSR-500, will I be happy with the Pro-164?
4- What programming software should I consider? Is the programming software much like the Win95 for the Pro-95? What a simple program.
Not related to the Pro-164, I did want to ask another question regarding Salt Lake's AC33 system and the Salt Lake International Airport's Trunk system (unsure of the number). There were no changes made to these systems, is that correct?
