The quality control on the 436's (Probably the 536's too, but I don't have any experience with them) is pretty bad, I've seen a couple of suspicious looking solder joints on the two I have opened up, along with all the other problems they have. At least I was able to fix the speaker rattle and cutout on one of them without it having to go back to Uniden for such a minor issue..

bcd 436 speaker

Scanner is only 6 months old and worked perfectly until several days ago when nothing was heard on it. I plugged in some headphones and it came to life once again. Still wont receive without ext speaker. Any Ideas? Hate to send it back for repairs.

Could be a dirty earphone jack. Try plugging and unplugging the headphones a few times. See if you get anything on the speaker.

When that happens on my 396XT I take my speaker/earphone jack and plug - unplug it several times in and out of the headphone jack. It usually clears up the oxidation on the pins inside.

I got my replacement BCD1436HP about 20 minutes ago. Unboxed the unit and uploaded my Favorites and I am back in business. Onslow/Jacksonville P25 and Viper P25 are loud and clear. I am taking a road trip to tomorrow and have the frequencies programmed for the counties between here and there. It is good to be able to hear the action once again. Thanks again for the advice and tips for hearing the action.

Bought a used 436 from amazon late last year. Within 3 months, my reception degraded to nothing. I tried a gazillion suggestions from the gazillions of posts on this subject with no success. I plunked down $80 and sent the unit back to Uniden for repair. I received a "refurb" replacement and the invoice just said the unit couldn't be fixed and was being replaced with no further explanation. So the replacement unit has been working great the last few months...until today. I've noticed the signal degrading over the last few days until the unit went nearly completely deaf again this evening. I've formatted the the memory card, reloaded data from Sentinel, changed cards, changed batteries, tried different P25 thresholds...all with no success. Not sure I care to spend another $80.

The problems these radios are having is just sad. I don't know how or why it's so hard to make a receiver that...receives. My HP-1 would go almost totally deaf at random and for some odd reason, a hard reset, usually about six of them, would restore it to normal. When it would go "deaf", it could barely get the 162.500 WX that is a very strong signal here. I couldn't take it anymore and sold it. I think only one of my friends who bought 436's still has his, the rest are gone, and they went back to the 396 or the 106/651/PSR-500's that actually work well, no drama.
