The coverage of this system is amazing. I was in Winthrop Harbor recently and drove along the IL/WI border into McHenry County, and was able to receive the system very well. I was using a cheap SpectrumForce mag-mount antenna with my SDS100 at the time.

I'm getting a perfect decode on my BCD436HP
Unfortunately, that didn't age well. After more than a year of listening to them with both the BCD436HP (and recently a BCD536HP) and SDS100, this is not always true. After some comparisons, the SDS100 works perfectly on their freqs, while the BCDx36HP chokes and misses calls just like they do on any other P25 simulcast system.
the licenses show that LSM is being used.
Not surprisingly, that explains exactly why. According to the licenses, both freqs are transmitted from 16 different cells using Linear Simulcast Modulation (LSM). Definitely something to keep in mind if you plan on using something other than an SDS100/200, Unication G4/G5, etc.

Quick question: I have never heard anything on 154.340, which is still listed in the DB under RED. Has anyone heard anything on this freq?

Most towns in RED Center retain their old legacy channels for administrative, on-scene and paging use.

154.340 was once the primary frequency for RED Center back in the 80's before they switched most operations to 154.445 when Wheeling and Northbrook joined as 154.445 was less crowded. After that 154.340 was used mostly by Park Ridge, Des Plaines and Rosemont (before DP and PR joined RED) and for mutual aid with RED Center towns like North Maine, Niles and Morton Grove.

Interesting...
That probably explains why I never hear anything on that frequency. Wouldn't on scene operations always be on IFERN Fireground channels, rather than their backup legacy freqs? Unless they just like to have them? Has anyone else heard anything on this particular frequency?

They are supposed to use the regular color-marked Fireground channels, especially when multiple agencies are working but often will use the "Admin" channels for local comms, communications back the the fire stations or in overflow conditions (when the FG channels are busy". They will occasionally use these old channels for car-car type traffic, fire inspectors, etc.

Thanks I heard it great. But why can't I hear anything on my portable?
What model is your portable? If it is an analog scanner it will not work, it needs to be digital.

If you have an APX make sure the NAC is set properly (it has been almost a decade since I programmed APX's so you are on your own there...)

Yeah, it’s an APX, it is P25 digital, and I’ll check the NAC. Thanks.
