I'm reading that you don't want RG-58 to be more than 20-25', and the Comet DS-150S comes with about 65' and ends with an SO-239 which I have an adapter to connect to my SDS200's BNC. Could I reduce any loss by trimming down the coax (maybe to almost 25') since I have a bunch coiled up, and then just put on a BNC so no adapter needed? Dumb idea?

40 feet of RG-58 at 900 MHz is 5.5 dB of loss and another 0.5 dB of loss in the adapter is 6 dB total. Very good idea to eliminate unneeded stuff. If you do mostly 800 MHz trunking, consider replacing the entire coax with something better like LMR-400 coax. At 25 feet in length and monitoring 800 MHz, there is less than 1 dB of loss!
