My SDS200 appears to have a very faint, static sound coming from the internal speaker. It is not loud by any means, and can only be heard if I put my head close to the unit. If I plug in an external speaker, the sound ceases from the internal speaker, and continues on the external speaker. Could it be the start of a larger issue, or is this continuous sound normal? Thanks

Did you purchase your SDS200 new or was it pre-owned?

Brand new from Uniden, roughly 3 months ago.
The "hum" issue seems to have been fixed. My SDS200 was built in late (I believe) 2020 and purchased a year ago. I have had zero hum issues and the radio is on about 14hrs a day.

There are things outside of the radio that can cause static or hum. An improperly shielded power supply, a "noisy" nearby electrical device, nearby high voltage transmission power lines, the power source to your home, etc.

Bought my 200 in mid august 2020...
It had the noise mitigation part in it...
I started getting the hum after about a month and was getting worse with time...

I did the ground fix on the display board and removed the noise mitigation part...
Been running great after that... No noise, no hum, no nothing...

Try pressing down on the center of the case (The metal part. Not the bezal) just above the display and see if the sound changes...
If it does change, it probably has the "Noise Mitigation" part in it...
I sure would of thought this would have been fixed by Uniden by now...

I bought sds200 back in March 2021 and haven't had any issues with it

Yours probably still has the noise mitigation part in it... No issues you say... Keep your fingers crossed...
They seem to start doing it after a period of time... How much time, No one can say...

This is what they use to ground the display board to the case... "Noise Mitigation Part"

Can you explain that a little more? I do not know much about electrical technicalities, but my 200 is plugged into a Tripp lite power strip that has a couple other things plugged into it, nothing crazy though. What do you mean by improperly shielded power supply and a "noisy" nearby electrical device?

I tried it and nothing changed, thanks for the suggestion though.

That's unfortunate, especially being how new it is. Should I send it in for repair under the warranty? Upon reading other threads, this issue appears to be recurring with many units, so if it's just gonna happen with every replacement unit I get, I'll just get used to it.

If it ain't to much trouble... You won't hurt anything.... I'm curious if the mitigation part is in there...

Remove the four case screws from the case in the back... And just slide it out enough (Pull the bezal forward) to see if there is the mitigation part
in about the center top, right behind the bezal...

You will see what is in the picture I showed above if it's there...
Oops... Forgot about the other internal cover... Check the video below... No big deal though...

All kinds of things can cause a hum in electronics. Without going into a long winded post about inductance, impedence, grounding, filtering and so forth... A quick way to test is to take your radio to another location (friend's house, work or some such) with just the power supply and antenna and see if it still hums. Touch the antenna, does that increase or decrease the hum or do nothing.

A TrippLite power strip is more of a surge protector than a hum filter. The ballast in a fluorescent lamp or fixture can cause audible hum and electrical hum. A poor ground in your home wiring can also do that.

Can anyone confirm if the new units being sold now have been fixed internally, not just with the mitigation part?
