With so many people pulling of their faceplates to fix the hum issue, you would hope someone would get an idea of how to remote it.
Perhaps there might be market for a Raspberry PI + custom control interface board (for volume/squelch control) + LCD screen + WiFi doodad. Like a Wi-Fi based RH-96 type thing with hardware knobs for squelch and volume control and a larger-than-stock LCD touchscreen, and a USB port to remote other models that don't have Wi-Fi. Basically ProScan in a dedicated box with hardware knobs and buttons...With so many people pulling of their faceplates to fix the hum issue, you would hope someone would get an idea of how to remote it.
What Uniden should have done was interface all the wiring between the head and the main unit by a single connector. That way it would have been easy for us to fabricate our own cable, and 3d print the brackets and covers ourselves.
I studied a bit. There are so many different headers and associated connections. You would need some sort of adapter board on each side with high density cabling, maybe HDMI.
Came across this tread this evening and figured I'd inquire if anyone has seen any forward movement with Uniden developing a remote head for the SDS200?
I own the Whistler TRX-2, which I've mounted in my vehicle. The unit itself is mounted under the driver seat and the remote head hard wired on a mount at center console. I'd love to replace it with an SDS200 but the unit as currently made is simply not practical for vehicle use. I know they call this a base/mobile scanner, but its really not designed to be a mobile device.
I realize some of you have come up with tablet solutions, and if I knew what I was doing, I could probably make that work. But for a $650.00 scanner, I would expect a detachable head unit to be a standard feature for a mobile unit.
Unfortunately, a center console mount is not an option for me as that is where my transmission gear shift is located. Pic of my current set up, you can see that the limited space does not make mounting of a full sized unit practical. Seems Uniden's marketing team is out of touch with their market, or maybe there is not much of a market for vehicle mounted scanners? Seems to me that a scanner that has the functionality of the SDS-200 (supporting wide array of systems, simulcast management, GPS enabled, awesome display) combined with the remote head style of the TRX-2 would result in strong sales. Neither Uniden or Whistler seem to come up with that kind of scanner.Your finding the SDS200 not an ideal mobile for your needs is understandable. Where does on mount a double-din sized radio these days? The answer is there’s not many places where you can and still read the display. But unless you do what I have done (install a center radio console akin to what you see in a police vehicle), you might consider going the handheld/portable route with the SDS100. It would need a coffee cup mounting system or some other method of holding the scanner where you can see the display, an external speaker and power supply.
As for the possibility of Uniden producing a remote head for the SDS200, I haven’t heard about them even considering this. I hope I’m wrong, but after their last attempt (where it was priced about as high as the scanner itself) and did poorly in sales To the point they discontinued it, I doubt we will ever see one.
I would also like to hear from others if what you hear are rumors or is there any truth to them?
Is there a project? Or is it some individual folks tinkering on their own with a tablet display solution and reporting back on results? It is not Uniden doing this it is MEMBERS HERE working on this project.
