I actually figure their solution will be something like an app that runs on a device (phone or tablet) and connects to the scanner in some way and then controls it via the app. Similar to how the Siren app was supposed to work (or does) but with some additional control. I would prefer something more like what you described (or I was trying to describe above) but I suspect that IF this is actually going to happen it will be more along the lines of an app instead of a physical remote head/faceplate. We'll see...

Because they've had such great success with their scanner apps?

As opposed to the RH 96?

If they were going to do one, they should have just followed the lead of the Ham radio manufacturers and designed it in from the start. It's not like they'd need a 25 wire cable like a Micor! :)

I've got two RH-96's that work great, they are mounted above the rear view mirror in both vehicles which frees up a lot of space, however I do agree that an out-of-box design for remote mounting would be better.. I'm still waiting for Siren to be able to directly connect with my 536 "from anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection." I'm not even sure Siren will run on my current phone.

Siren did what I need it to, which essentially was be a seeable display. It was disappointing in other ways, though. The RH96 was good for what it was, but not having the ability to remotely shut off the scanner and not having audio routed to the head were both big failings. For the cost, it drastically under performed.

I had two of them at one time and they were good for running the 396T and XT scanners as mobile radios, but if I were planning to put those in a car trunk or under a seat, they'd be less than ideal.

The benefit of the 15/346/996 series is the stability with power cycling that the scanners with SD cards don't have. My two-ways, scanners and some other accessories are remote mounted with their own power source from the battery and a relay so that I can switch the power to everything from one switch. All speakers are remote mounted strategically so that I know which radio it is from the direction the audio is coming from-not sure if the audio being routed to the remote head would have been a benefit for me, but I do see your point.

SDS200 with tablet running Siren App. Actually works better than it did on the 536HP.

How did you do the connection for that?

The exact same way you do the 536HP. You put the scanner's IP address in SIREN and off you go. The only bad thing is (at least on the android version of Siren) it only works on version 7 and older. If your vehicle has 4G wifi then you connect the SDS 200 to the car's wifi and the tablet to the car's wifi and use the scanner's IP. That particular SDS 200 is running wireless with a bridge, at home you could do it on your home LAN. Makes it easy to see and gives you the touch screen ability, makes the SDS 200 work like a HP1 or HP2 as far as touch screen.

Well, I guess you could touch the screen it just wouldn't do anything except leave fingerprints.

If you can't turn it on and off, and if you can't adjust the volume and squelch from the "remote display" then it's pretty useless for mobile applications.

I would love to have a remote head!! I managed to do a pretty decent install in my Charger with my 536HP. However if a remote head were available I'd put back the factory part that belongs there and mount the head somewhere else in proximity. This will do in a pinch. Unfortunately there is NOT enough room for the SDS200 in the same slot.

The remote head for the 536 in my Raptor:
Truck_radios_13b.jpg

The radio is mounted out of sight in the center console. The cell phone / Android is an older Samsung S5 that I was no longer using, with no SIM card installed, its only purpose is to control the radio. I cannot turn the radio on or off via the Siren app, but most other controls work. I just leave the radio turned on all the time. When I fire the truck up it comes on. I turn on the S5, hit the Siren Icon, and have control.

I am really considering such a setup for my wifes car. SDS200 plus old cell phone to run Siren. There is no room to mount the 200 for convenient control, so I am thinking under the seat for the radio, and cell phone / Siren App mounted in a console pocket with clear line of sight to the driver, there is a very conveniently placed storage pocket with closable door that seems perfect for the task..

Great, but, that's not a true "Remote head" for an SDS200.

We want the exact faceplate, knobs, display, that the SDS200 has, in a remote mount (thinner) form.

As do I. If the SDS200 had such a remote, and it was of reasonable small size, my 536HPs would all be replaced by SDS200's, and there would be one each, with remote, in my truck, my wifes car, and my car, today. Probably not in the house, as remote heads are less required there. However as near as I can tell, there is not one, outside Siren and an Android device. Nor, based on UPMans input, does it appear like one is in the near future.

So I presented my solution to the person specifically talking about the 536, vs the SDS200. I have just about made up my mind to try the same setup with the SDS200, replacing a couple of the 536's. But not quite pulled that trigger yet.
