The technology exists to make just about anything work. The political will (and egos) does not.
Trust me...I'm telling you. Building a simulcast system with existing frequencies to cover a larger geographical area than the original frequencies were originally designed for will not meet muster with frequency coordination. UHF frequencies just tunnel right down the Connecticut River valley down the center of the state and will create a very bad situation. You can do it, but if you are using higher profile sites , you can be guaranteed those sites will require very low ERP...low power with very low gain antennas. Which will not provide expected coverage. Low profile sites would need to be added...which negates money savings.

My point was not a proposal to the town fathers nor a RFP. What I was saying is there are many ways to make these little town/city radio systems much more efficient and cost effective.

Simsbury isn’t trying to cover a larger area are they? But maybe a P25 digital simulcast system will do better coverage within the same area and with the same power output settings as their current analogue system does?

And it’s a sure bet the studies and testing were conducted before they decided on the new system.

For sure. A P25 simulcast system will provide much better coverage within the needed area. While an analog UHF system with a single transmitter and multiple satellite receivers does enhance talkback, especially for portables, sometimes portable receive inside structures can cause issues. Plus UHF does at times have multipath issues. P25 simulcast should address that. And by tailoring site antennas to cover needed areas, it is surely possible to achieve the same or better coverage using less power.

still cheaper to add a CLMRN site for coverage than to replace a whole system. I'm surprised more towns don't go that route.

Because CLMRN is not a one size fits all solution for everyone. It's amazing what a responsible vender can do with existing infrastructure to provide a service to a town without scrapping an entire system and drinking the 700/800 trunking system koolaid like so many of these "consultants" push.

Due to my position, I cant publicly comment on the responsibility of vendors or lack thereof, but you are right, the state system isn't right for everyone. It has its benefits, but it depends on the needs of the town.

Looking at the RR database, it appears that Simsbury is changing their Public Works frequency from VHF to UHF. I suppose this is related to their rumored switch to a P25 system.

Yup, they are most likely starting to get the new radios in.

And since Public Works still has a specific frequency, i would say the P25 system will apparently not be trunked.
Not necessarily, they may not have all radios and infrastructure in place for a full transition. So this just could be a spare freq that the town has that is being used for the time being.

That is correct, they are going to be conventional at the start. Never say never but the PD will be going digital conventional at the start.

Today i heard a lot of radio checks involving a radio tech guy on the Simsbury PD analog freq of 453.75. Sounds like something may be changing soon.

One thing I've noticed is the signal strength for the Ambulance repeater on 452.050 has greatly increased and can me monitored from Bloomfield without issue now. It was horrible before. Fire has always been excellent. I don't monitor the PW or PD.

I'm in Canton, and have always gotten a stronger signal on Simsbury Fire, Public Works and Ambulance than on the PD channel.
