That's insane (to me at least), using aggressors to perform air defense on any kind of routine basis.

I agree that using F-22's all of the time for it is a waste of resources (F-15s are a better fit)..., but aggressors?

Yes, I get that it is a secondary mission, but (as a comparison) Luke AFB fighter instructors and F-16's could be used for air defense as a secondary mission (at least in the past), in reality, if it has to be done though, things are worse than they appear.

I understand the reasoning, but it smells like scrapping the bottom of the barrel, and just concerns me.

Thanks
Joel

Joel,

I agree. Especially since Eielson is a Fairbanks which is a fair distance away from the Bering Straits. Scramble fro Eielson would take more time than using the F-22s at Elmendorf.

Must have scrapped as TEFLON-03 #16-46022 was scheduled on ACARS enroute Pease changed heading and now just moving into Dover area.
CAP fighters NOBLE-01,02 moving in A/A 263.200.Notice your tail for TEFLON-02 is the same.
TEFLON-03 on ZDC 354.150 req entering Blue Claw/Attica? CAP at FL230 tanking boom checks on 247.050
That's weird. I know when he called HUNTRESS he was saying TEFLON 2. When I looked for him on ADSB he was TEFLON 2. I didn't even notice that he changed his callsign after I posted. Someone's messing with my mind man! 😃
Thanks for the update Mark.

Aggressor pilots though are some of your most skilled best pilots. They have done it all and well armed F-16 for basic
air intercepts is hard to beat. I bet the bombers were scratching their heads wondering who that was :)
Not sure why NORAD uses those big lumbering tired thirsty F-15C's for CAP duty when a F-16 can do same chasing down slow planes.
Recently heard F-15 CAP pilots chatting that they don't take full fuel load from tanker as the weight if called upon to dive
down into low altitudes and slow speeds makes for real bad handling with that extra weight.

The question about the skilled pilots isn't the point, the Thunderbird pilots are also skilled and capable,

The point I was making is that, for example: One of the selling points of the Thunderbirds is that the aircraft can be reconfigured for combat quickly (if needed).

However, if they go and reconfigure them, and have them doing air defense., there is a question about the state of our forces.

(BTW I really think F-15s are a better interceptor when the target is a high altitude bomber, or unknown,.... but that's a separate discussion).

Thanks
Joel

Oregon will be first to get the new F-15EX two seater but can be single pilot crew use as well.
Air Force receives first F-15EX > Air Force > Article Display (af.mil)

Last year or so have heard various F-15C ANG chit chat and their opinions.
Many are trying for F-35 training which has a long waiting list and few are selected from the current Guards.
Ohers say nah will stick with my Airline job and leave the ANG when F-15C's are done.
Some say F-16's are ok CAP planes and bombers but despise Vipers.. A real mix of stories for sure.
