Air-air on 142.3

1140local: Since the 317.425 that Travis posted is Potomac TRACON in the BWI area, I went looking thru VHF for an air-air, and have found somebody active on 142.3. Can't tell who it is.

142.3 is a RAVEN flight of A-10s from Martin State. At 1155, they switched to Martin Tower 297.2 for landing so they're getting out of some very crowded airspace. Potomac's controllers are getting a bit testy with anyone asking for anything outside their flight plans.

Jack, The FALCONs are described in a message above from Mark. And, sorry, I didn't see you had already answered the 142.3 question.

1203: Golden Knights plane landing at BWI...just sent to 119.4 for runway 33.
1203: Potomac controller asks FALCON 11 if it's okay that the cameraman wants to go to 3500 feet....it's okay with them...317.425
1207: Believe the camera flight is RAVEN 3 and is working the Army National Guard freq 229.4 (Weide AAF Ops in this area)
1212: FALCON 11 flight to 2500 feet after flyby and turning to 240 degrees for Andrews...317.425
1214: "FALCON 11 turn left direct to Andrews" (de Potomac)...317.425
1215: POtomac handed off the FALCON 11 flight to 335.5....they check in there as a flight of four F-18s for Andrews...coming in on the overhead...335.5
Never did find the FALCON interflight freq.\
1219: FALCON 11 reports airfield in sight...3 mile initial....handed off to tower...335.5
1220: FALCON 11 8 miles to the northeast for the overhead...ADW Tower...349.0
1224: FALCON 11 flight touching down...349.0
1225: There's another player - female voice - working 229.4 that seems to be part of the event.
1226: "FREEDOM 06 calling FREEDOM Ground, how do you read us now?"...229.4
1233: FREEDOM 06 calls FREEDOM Ground and asks, "How's the picture?" (FREEDOM 6 must be sending video from above the stadium.)...229.4
I believe the reference above to RAVEN 3 was for the controller at the stadium. So.....
FALCON 11 (four F/A-18E types...returned to Andrews, pilots jumped in a car and are on the way to the game)
RAVEN 3 (stadium controller)
FREEDOM 06 (airborne camera work) NOTE: If these are the same FREEDOM helos we've been hearing in this area, this one is a UH-72A, 07-2006. Tony had to remind me of this since I had gone totally blank on his ID.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS (parachute team...landed back at BWI after the drop)
There's a fifth FALCON at Andrews that was a spare...expect to hear five departing ADW later.
1243: FREEDOM 06 calls FREEDOM Ground and says, "We're going to the saloon. We'll be back."...229.4

I haven't been watching TV. Have they shown the plane or helo that's doing the video work from above that is no doubt FREEDOM 06?

1252: MAD HOG (OA-10, PA-ANG Willow Grove) up with Harrisburg A/D...281.525
1301: UGLY (A-10, PA-ANG Willow Grove), flight of two with Harrisburg A/D...281.525
1311: Coast Guard 6517 (HH-65B, CGAS San Francisco???) reports outbound from Greenbelt to Atlantic City on the DCA Helo Control channel...120.75
1314: PA-ANG A-10s working interflight...141.725 (Haven't heard that one in ages) (CADE flight)
1315: U/I PA-ANG A-10 with Philadelphia TRACON...319.15 (CADE)
1316: Same flight over to Philly TRACON...317.55 (CADE)
1321: CADE 1 flight of three A-10s to ZDC-Casino and check in at 8000 feet...then cleared to 10K...285.4 (They're on the way to Pax for R-6609)
1321: YANKEE 31 (C-21A, 84-0124 CT-ANG Bradley) to McGuire Dispatch for phone patch to DSN 220-xxxx....372.2
1323: YANKEE 31 to McGuire Dispatch again...has two items...YANKEE 28 departed CAK (Akron-Canton OH) at 1800Z and YANKEE 31 wants phone patch to DSN 220-xxxx...372.2
1325: TEAM 60 (KC-10A, 86-0027, 305th AMW McGuire) to McGuire CP reporting 30 minutes out, A-3..reports that an F-18 broke his probe off in their left refueling basket...319.4
1327: CADE 1 handed to Patuxent and check in at 10000 feet, cancel IFR, looking for R-6609 surface to 20,000 (get 3500-20000) feet until 1400 local...354.8
1329: TEAM 60 calling Pilot Dispatch...x2, no joy...372.2
1330: CADE says they'll also use R-4006 since they're the only players in town...354.8
1336: CADE flight has been using the same interflight while working at Patuxent...141.725
1341: CRAB 53 (C-130J. 97-1353, 135th AS MD-ANG) working Phillips AAF...talking about a drop in 45 minutes and another 30 minutes after that...126.15
1342: SPAR 76 (C-37A, 01-0076, 309th AS) coming into ADW...w/TRACON now...heard him earlier calling Andrews for arrival message on 378.1 but was busy with the TEAM 60 aircraft at the time and didn't log him.
1346: FREEDOM AIR (06) calling FREEDOM Ground to report back on station. Guess she's done with her "saloon break."...229.4 (Added ID above)
She has absolutely none of that normal helo sound in her transmitter. Guess they've done a good job with that problem on this new helo.
1356: SPAR 76 with ADW Tower for landing...118.4
1356: CRAB 54 (C-130J, 97-1354, 135th AS MD-ANG) with Phillips AAF to make a drop...126.15
1359: FREEDOM AIR (06) says she'll loiter for a bit...229.4
Earlier, she identified as FREEDOM 06 on every transmission. Now, she's just calling herself FREEDOM AIR without the suffix.

1401: CRAB 54 says he's finished with the current drop...will be back in 44 minutes for another drop...tells Phillips he'll drop sandbags on this next drop, do a couple of VFR patterns and then return to Martin State...126.15
I didn't log them ealier but CRAB 53 and 54 departed Martin State about 1303.
1402: The CADEs have been cross-talking on 141.725 and 354.8 as they perform their maneuvers at Pax (they had told Pax earlier they'd finish at 1400 but still going)
1405: CADE 1 calls Pax Advisory to say they're done, looking for IFR home at 7000 feet...354.8
1407: FREEDOM AIR (06) calls FREEDOM Ground to say she's on the other side of the city...229.4
1407: CADE 1 says he'll contact Dover...354.8
1411: CADE 1 to Dover Approach...257.875
1413: CADE 1 flight reports direct DuPont...257.875
1414: CADEs chatting/joking with one of the A-10 pilots about a problem he's having...giving him great advice like "pushing the malfunction button" and other things that have him laughing...141.725
1416: CADEs departing 7000 for 5000 feet...257.875
1417: CADEs pointing out Dover Downs in their 2-3 o'clock position...257.875
1417: CADE flight handed off to Philadelphia TRACON and check in at 5000 feet....looking for the visual, tower pattern...direct Modena 060 course...269.25
1419: CADE 3 to Ops...CADE 1 is 31490 Code 3 for navigation, 2 is 11480 and 3 is 11490...343.0
1421: CADE 3 reports to the group he's back on...269.25
1422: CRAB 53 to Phillips ready to drop...cleared to drop...126.15
1423: CADE 1 flight handed off to Philly TRACON (button 6) and check in as flight of 3 at 5000 feet...say they'll stay together and look for the radar...319.15
They've been in constant chat on interflight 141.725 and sound like they're having a good old time. So would any of us getting to fly a Hawg on a nice sunny day...or any other day.
1425: CADE points out the University of Delaware to the rest of the flight...then points out Christiana Hospital...one of them says his parents' house is directly under his plane...then he's pointing out the school he graduated from...141.725
1428: CADE flight to Philly TRACON and check in at 5000 feet looking for the visual...cleared direct....291.7
1429: CADE 1 flight cleared from 5 to 3000 feet...291.7 (This is generally where I lose them.)
1432: FREEDOM AIR calling FREEDOM Ground...general chat...229.4 (I think this is a different female than was on earlier as FREEDOM 06...same plane, differenct female)
1433: Something just broke squelch on the Willow Grove Tower freq....might have been CADE but I couldn't understand anything...340.2 (Done with them)
1436: CRAB 54 calling Phillips Tower...126.15

I'm calling it quits here. It's Saturday and I'm sitting in front of a bank of radios. Gotta get some chores done.

Army/Navy flyby

COMPLETELY Missed by CBS! Wasn't it supposed to happen at the end of the National Anthem? Flyby wasn't even mentioned by announcers.

TinEar asked "Have they shown the plane or helo that's doing the video work from above that is no doubt FREEDOM 06?"

The only aerial shot I saw pre-game looked like it would most likely have come from a blimp, or possibly helo, but the audio at the time had no rotor noise in the background as typical with a helo camera shot.

Rgr Tin heard that TEAM 60 report.TEAM 60 sounded a little bit miffed but said
they retracted left warp basket no problem.
Guess McGuire TEAM have a Navy souvenir?
Wonder if TEAM 60 dragged FALCON 11 across country?
FALCON may have to stop at Oceana NAS to get a spare fuel boom probe.

WG CADES inbound from South talking A/A 141.725 giving tour of Delaware area
Northbound.."My parents House and my old school"

Hi,

Just one with a time today while at IAD, the other two I didn't write down, both were with IAD TWR East on the ILS 1R circle 30 approach. Saw the C-26B but missed the C-21A...

12.03.2007

1955Z 120.100 IAD TWR East - FREEDOM 08 (UH-72A 07-2008) - ILS rwy 1R for landing Signature FBO.

It was a "nothing" day for MilAir due to the weather. For much of the day winds were around 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph which prevented many aircraft from flying. A few transports, a few tankers through the area and that was about it. There were a few foreign flagged aircraft into and through the area...

1011: Italian Air Force...(Falcon 900EX, tail MM62244)
1111: Belgian Air Force...BAF 630 (A310-222, tail CA-10, 21 Squadron)
1316: Saudi Air Force...(B737-7DP, tail HZ-102)
1553: Luxembourg...NATO 26 (CT-49A, tail LX-N19997, NAEW&CF, Geilenkirchen)
1907: Russian Government...(IL-62M, tail RA-86572)

And pictures of those five aircraft.... (which, of course, are out of order...from left to right - Belgian, Saudi, NATO, Italian, Russian)

Very nice catch John. TREND 37 and 38 were the pair of F-117s coming home at last from the Dubai air show with their McGuire based KC-10A (85-0033.)

I found this airspace vioations link while reading my morning news

http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/aircraft_violations.htm

Not exactly sure where the actual database itself is hosted, but I will look into it further.

Paul

That's a fantastic database presentation of the violations Paul. Unfortunately, the Frederick Newspost gives no attribution information at all to go with it. You might want to check the FSOSC (Flight Services Operations Support Center) within the FAA which is the agency that produces that data I believe.

I think they may be testing the laser warning system. JOSA-295 is 30mi west of MANNE heading towards LDN. 260.9
Says he's never done this before.

1720- Hear him switching from 118.675 to 119.85
1723- Reporting the red-green sequences. 260.9 Then some chatter with TRACON, heading 150. 6k for 4k. 119.85
Two different guys doing the talking.
1726- 090 down to 2k, looking for the field 119.85

Must've originally misheard his location.

Earlier heard BUZZARD-25 calling ADW Metro. He faded out pretty quickly and never heard any more.

1729- REACH-?? calling someone on 305.5 for AR.

Just for an ID...JOSA 295 is a C-21A, tail 84-0102, from the 458th AS Scott AFB IL.

Another new C-17A has showed up at Dover. It's tail 07-7171 and was flying as ROYAL 71 around 1530 this afternoon.
****************************************************
JohnFB: There was a new approach/departure freq posted by the FAA today for Albany International Airport. The only significance of that is that several smaller airports within striking distance of there use the freq as aircraft arrive or depart those airports. So, it covers the airports at Albany, Glens Falls and Hudson in New York, Bennington in Vermont, Pittsfield and Great Barrington in Massachusetts. The new freq is 132.825 and the one it replaces is 125.0. I would imagine from your location, you would hear the traffic in the Albany area and to the east of there.
****************************************************
1750: DC-ANG F-16s up 143.6...callsign ANGRY, WILD and SCARY all working this freq...each is a flight of two. At 1758, SCARY goes to 139.15 and WILD to 143.15 but they're all still working together and crossing freqs as they set up the next ACM mission.
1750: FLYER flight of A-10s PA-ANG on the way home to Willow Grove...269.25, 319.15 and 291.7 with Philly TRACON and 343.0 with Ops...interflight 142.25
1759: CRAB 54 (C-130J, 97-1354, 135th AS MD-ANG) airborne from Martin State w/CRAB Ops....384.1

1810: WILD 2 is being sent home since he's low on gas...WILD 1 is staying with the group for another round of practice intercepts....143.6
1816: WILD 2 to TRACON for approach to Andrews...335.5
1816: HOIST 91 (KC-10A, 86-0030, 305th AMW McGuire),,,ETA 2350Z, A-1, 6 crew plus 22 crew aboard, need transportation for both groups, no cargo...319.4
1818: ANGRY flight to SOF report 10 minutes out, both Code 1...139.9
1820: WILD 2 to ADW Tower, 8 miles, gear, stop, right...349.0
1820: Meanwhile, SCARY 1 and 2 along with WILD 1 are doing one last exercise as they get ready to go home...143.6
1822: ANGRY flight to Potomac TRACON for ADW approach to runway 1R...335.5
It appears the DC-ANG F-16s were doing their ACM work in the Vienna MD area at a fairly good altitude accounting for some great listening.
1823: REACH 2098 [female] (C-17A, 02-1098, 437th AW Charleston) to Dover CP...arriving at 40 after the hour, A-1, 6 pax, need 160K fuel and upload info...349.4
1828: REACH 2098 tells Dover they want a quick turn...349.4
1829: ANGRY flight to ADW Tower for runway 1R...349.0
1832: WILD 1 to ADW Tower for landing runway 1R...349.0
And that leaves just the SCARY flight still flying.
1834: REACH 535 calling Andrews CP...no joy...378.1
1834: JOSA 295 (C-21A, 84-0102, 458th AS Scott) airborne from Andrews after a short stopover...TRACON
1838: JOSA 295 trying to Andrews but he's using the Langley SOF freq...383.2
1839: JOSA 295 to Griffin command to report airborne at 2330Z...378.1
1841: SCARY flight to TRACON for ADW approach...335.5
1848: REACH 535 (C-17A, 90-0535, 62nd AW McChord) still trying to reach Andrews...still no joy...378.1
I believe his callsign should be REACH 0535 but he's shortening it and dropping the zero.
1849: NAVY 7N258 has also been calling Andrews multiple times with no joy...141.55 (Home station NAF Washington C-12)
1849: REACH 535 finally gets Andrews...ETA on the hour, A-1, no cargo, 10 pax to offload, need parking...378.1

1915: NAVY 7C143 with ADW tower for landing 1L...118.4 (Another C-12 from Norfolk)
1916: CRAB 53 (C-130J, 97-1353, 135th AS MD-ANG) also up...think he was was CRAB Ops...384.1 (Heard him from the next room)
1918: Yup...CRAB 53 to CRAB Ops...15 minutes out, A-1, approximately 24K remaining on the fuel...384.1
1923: MUSSEL 02 reports off Brandywine on squadron ops freq...141.7
1924: BLUE 81 (KC-10A, 85-0033, 305th AMW McGuire) calling McGuire CP...no joy...319.4 (This is the tanker that accompanied the F-117s home from Dubai yesterday.)
1928: CRAB 53 with Martin State Tower for landing...121.3

Ref Below: REACH 920 is a C-17A, 06-6163, 60th AMW Travis. ETHYL 84 is a KC-10A, 87-0123 from the 305th AMW at McGuire
