Mid-1300 hour: WILD flight of four F-16s from Andrews on the way to W-107 with Giant Killer. Their interflight is 143.6 and their work will be on 312.3

CATBIRD (C20A, BuNo 830500, CINC US Naval Forces Europe) on the way to Andrews. Worked PTD 386.6 and then 139.3...25 minutes out, wants "Quarterdeck Parking"...needs 12K fuel and services.

MAD DOG F-15 Langley flight into W-386 with Giant Killer 249.8...heard w/Norfolk TRACON 370.925 prior...mentions interflight freq 315.85

Willow Grove A-10s on interflight 142.25

1355: NAVY 7W171 going into Langley on 141.75 to drop off 4 pax....IDs as a C-12 (actually a UC-12B) and gives his tail (BuNo) as 161319...needs 3K gas.
1358: MAD HOG A-10s from Willow Grove with ZDC-Kenton 354.15 and then to Patuxent on 305.2 to enter R-4006....those are our guys from 142.25 interflight.

1408: UGLY flight of PA-ANG A-10s working 143.25 interflight....and at 1413 with ZDC-Kenton 354.15
1416: U/I fighters on interflight 141.725 (A seldom heard PA-ANG preset so it's probably them...and it's A-10 type chat....and they're working the Pax area)
1435: FURY 41 flight with Giant Killer to enter W-386...249.8 and w/Norfolk 370.925 before that.

1525: THUG 01 and 02 arriving back at McGuire...THUG 01 doing the talking for both of them and confirms the tails as "131 and 132" (04-4131/04-4132) as I listed earlier when they went out in the 1000 hour...319.4
1535: Have an E-3B/C from Tinker AFB OK going into Dover (tail 71-1407, 552nd Air Control Wing) but I can't catch his callsign. It's _____ 60. (Got it...it's SENTRY 60...I should have known that immediately when I got the tail) Needs transportation for 39 and about 10 of them need transportation to go get rental cars. He seems concerned about whether there'll be a "FOLLOW ME" truck waiting for him when he lands...349.4
1546: REACH 7039 (C-5B, 87-0039, 337th Airlift Squadron, Westover MA) into Dover...349.4
1557: REACH 5007 (C-5B, 85-0007, 436th Airlift Wing Dover DE) to Dover CP with arrival msg...20 minutes out, A-1, needs parking and crew bus...349.4

Around 1530, there was a Spanish Air Force (These days called: Aeronave Militar Espanola, Ministerio de Defensa) B703 flying overhead this area at FL 350. His tail was T.17-3 from the 471 Squadron (Escuadron) ♪ (I waved.)

Ref Below: Yes, I looked at the wrong list...corrected it when he flew overhead. :)

C5's

That's the new C-5M (85-0004) assigned to the 436th AW at Dover.Heard him with Dover.
Thanks for the info. I'd heard that several of the re-engined airframes were in service but I didn't realize that this was one of them.

A follow-up on the C5's at the 167th Airlift Wing at MRB: Had a chance to talk to someone in the know this morning. I was wondering why the C5's were not being flown (I've only heard one on a check flight since they've arrived). Turns out that when they tried to jack them up for maintenance on the gear the ramp started buckling. One mission to SW Asia in early January was flown with a C5 from Dover and something is in the works with Westover.

Let me add there is some controversy whether 85-0004 is one of the M types or not. One article said yes by showing a picture of the C-5 with that tail number as being one of them but others think that might have been a mistake. Everyone that maintains C-5 lists seems to agree that 86-0013 will be/is an M type. I guess only time will tell.

That's a funny story about the ramp buckling. Of course, no one tested the weight bearing limits of the ramps before the (political) decision was made to base C-5s at that airport - with a runway that also needs to be extended so they can take off and land. But, hey, it's only taxpayers' dollars.

Some Google checking showed that a couple weeks ago Lockheed flew 3rd in series of C-5M's this one an A model out of Dobbins Ga of course.I think all 3 are still down there.
Said first 2 were C-5B's and would be used as future test beds etc.
I'm sure if and when Dover gets first active C-5M it will be all over the local news.

Good evening everyone,
Between about 2015 and 2100 had FLYER 1 & 2 with CADE 1 up in the DUKE. Were air to air on 138.30 and 301.60 (DUKE Primary). They were doing practice laser bomb runs around Emporium, PA. Must have had some of their newer models up and by the sounds of it they are really getting the hang of them. What once sounded rather cumbersome has become very efficient. I may have said it before but woe to anyone (or thing) that is on the receiving end of an attack by these guys. Center freqs into and out of the DUKE were 353.85 (ZOB) and 338.30 (ZNY).

Yes also slightly earlier that evening MADHOG and UGLIES were working Pax River using
new equipment also.Mentioned they can slave their targeting pods now with ease to align potential targets.
One A-10 sparkled/lased 2 seperate targets within 25 meters of each other while 2nd hit with 2 separate GBU's.
Was complex drill but sounded like they had no problems.A/A 142.250 and Pax discrete 256.800.rtb WG with ZDC Smyrna 354.150

1055: LION 11 handed to Norfolk TRACON...370.925

Out of time...end of log for now. Too bad because UHF conditions are fantastic today.

Popping back in at 1123 long enough to say I've never heard conditons as they are today. I'm hearing flights out in W-105 and the ground station at HAWK Ops at Barnes on 143.825 and the ZOB freqs all popping. All kinds of strange freqs that I've never heard before are active all over the 300-380 range which I happened to be searching. It's activity from way out of this area. Wish I could stay and listen...but....

I was able to do some listening from Solomon's Island today. I showed up at 2:30 just in time to seen an Osprey leaving. I got my scanner out just in time for a pair of F-18s landing on Rwy 14. Didn't catch the callsign. They had some sort of red and white design on the tails. Looked like this one http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/images/ea-18g-image104.jpg So it must be a Salty Dog.
Extremely loud for such little power being applied.:D I guess the residents don't mind too much. I know I wouldn't. That would be so cool to live across the bay from Pax.

A few T-38 flights in and out. A WARLOCK-3 who I think was doing a touch-and-go. That was some sort of small twin-engine prop. Also heard COLT, SCARY, WILD on the GK freqs. Finally, heard a VIPER flight heading back to Langley <357.1>.

Heard it all clearly with my 396T with RS 800mhz antenna.

1849-ROMAN-72 <327.8>
1856- ROCCO-62 heading to AR636 <118.125>
1905- OPEC-29 also with GK <118.125>

Willow Grove A-10s should be up shortly...not sure how many groups, but one will be coming back early since their tanker cancelled <413.175>.

Earlier this evening had COYOTE 31 (AH-1 HMLA773) doing some pattern work with the tower <340.2>. I believe they used be stationed at KNXX before being transferred to Johnstown, PA in the 90's. The latest BRAC will send them to McGuire.

1922 FLYER flight of 2 departs KNXX - handed off to Philly departure <263.125>
1924 COYOTE 31 departs and will return around 2230 local
1932 2 more A-10s just departed from KNXX (not near scanner to hear callsign used)
1943 final group of 2 A-10s in the air (again not near scanner to hear callsign used)

Philly appears to be swapping some of their frequencies. On the UHF side 291.7 appears to be replaced by 263.125. I don't know if the VHF frequency has also been replaced, 126.85 was the prior companion to 263.125

Had Flyer flight of two and UGLY flight of two up in the DUKE again tonight between 2000 and 2100. Work was similar to last night but with one of the UGLIES playing the role of FAC as COWBOY 21. Took out a bridge, a convoy near a farm, a comm truck, and an adjacent support building , all simulated of course. Other elements thrown into the equation were friendlies approaching the convoy from South, a SAM site, and an anti-aircraft battery near the town (Emporium, PA Again).

Freqs used: UGLY A2A 138.300 and switched to 138.500 on the way home. UGLY in the DUKE 259.40. FLYER A2A 143.25 and 301.60 in the DUKE. UGLY flight switched to 143.25 to work with FLYER taking out the above targets. 353.85 Cleveland Center and 338.30 NY Center.

Again, efficient and lethal....

Dave, UGLY flight of three PA-ANG A-10s coming your way....w/Philly 263.125 > ZNY-Pottstown 278.3 > ZNY-Williamsport 338.3 at 1324. Interflight 143.25.

WILD and SCARY flights of F-16s from Andrews in W-107 with Giant Killer 255.0. EAch flight is a two ship. WILD on 143.6 and SCARY 139.15 interflight. Freq routing was TRACON Departure 348.725 > interflight freqs > Baltimore TRACON 317.425 > ZDC-Swann 360.7 > ZDC-Coyle 254.3 > ZDC-Sea Isle 281.45 > Giant Killer 255.0, Ops freq for coordination is GK's tactical freq 337.225. Takeoff time was 1300. They possibly worked with an E-3 from Tinker while in W-107 -- callsign CHALICE.
1348: WILD flight on the way home from W-107
1349: SCARY flight tells GK they're ready fro RTB and request direct Sea Isle...255.0

A DC 91 (KC-135R, 62-3556, 756th ARS Andrews) departed Andrews early 1300 hour and was then heard trying to contact RHODY Ops (RI-ANG Ops) on 383.3 so that's probably his mission for this afternoon.

REACH 01 came into Andrews late 1200 hour. He was not a C-21A as expected. This time it was a KC-10A, (85-0031, 305th AMW McGuire) delivering a few passengers.

Other than that, there's the normal flock of PAT/JOSA jets flying self-important people from base to base at a cost of many thousands of dollars each.
REACH aircraft are ferrying their cargo and passengers around the area too.
CRAB 53 (C-130J, 97-1353, 135th AS MD-ANG Warfield ANGB) airborne at 1730Z reported to Crab Ops 385.9

1400-1404: Raven Ops talking with aircraft on the ground at MTN so expect A-10s up shortly...347.2
1404: WILD flight back with TRACON (ADW Approach)...335.5
1411: VENUS 23 (C-20B, 86-0203, 99th AS Andrews) reports airborne about 3 minutes after the hour, going to Patrick Henry, Richmond and back to Andrews...378.1
1414: Martin State clearance delivery just gave routing to an A-10 flight...departure freq will be 290.475...253.4
1415: SCARY flight also now with TRACON...335.5
The SCARY flight lost voice contact with each other on the way back from W-107 for about 5 minutes. SCARY 2 just couldn't be found on any voice channel. Flight leader broke off his flight plan to go look for him based on his radar track and just about that time the lost SCARY came back up on interflight 139.15. He wasn't aware he was being called and didn't know why he didn't hear the flight leader.
1419: Weakly hearing a DRAGNET (E-3C, Tinker AFB OK) out in the W-122 area with Giant Killer freq...251.6
1420: WILD and SCARY plopping down at Andrews with Tower...349.0
1421: COLT 1 flight of A-10s reports off at 19 after the hour and "in the goo at about 1200" to Raven Ops...347.2....they're using 142.3 for an interflight freq. COLT flight goes to Patuxent for their work.

Wouldn't it be great to have a radar scope to follow these fighter flights from takeoff to their mission location and back home again?

1430: Couple of REACH transports flying overhead...REACH 6023 (C-5B, 86-0023, 337th AS Westover MA) at FL 320.....and REACH 3563 (C-130H, 93-1563, 156th AS NC-ANG) at FL 240.
1435: RAVEN flight of A-10s from MTN to Raven Ops to report off at 28 past the hour...347.2
1438: COLT and RAVEN flights talking about the wx in the Pax area on common ops freq...RAVEN asks COLT if they're going to stay around the shore area and around Vienna (MD) so I guess RAVEN flight is also going to the Pax area...143.8
(No interflight found for RAVEN...on FM perhaps? I still think they may have changed their FM low band freqs. I used to hear them very often on those freqs for a few minutes after takeoff but no longer have done so over the past couple of months. Speaking of low band FM...there is a Weide AAF low band freq that I've heard reference to a couple of times in past two days - Guard copters switching to it but I haven't had the chance to search for it yet.)
1441: TROJAN 41 flight into W-386 with Giant Killer on...249.8

1450: COBRA 61 (Langley flight) into W-386 and will be MARSA with TROJAN and TRITON...249.8
1452: CRAB 57 (C-130J, 98-1357, 135th AS MD-ANG) into the area descending...385.9
1455: TRITON 51 flight into W-386 with Giant Killer...249.8
1455: Have a flight leader telling his wingman to call SOF (gives DSN)...261.0 (NJ-ANG Devil Ops freq) Turns out to be CAPE 11 (Otis MA F-15s) on his way to Langley...having a problem with the wx.
1456: TROJAN 43 to Giant Killer with a liquid cooling problem...is declaring emergency as soon as he's switched to the Norfolk TRACON freq...249.8
1459: TROJAN 43 to Norfolk TRACON..."checking in emergency"...followed by some chat about coming out of W-386 and his altitude...370.925

1500: While listening to the emergency from TROJAN 43, there was an EVAC 37872 (C-130E, 171st AS MI-ANG) on one of the TRACON freqs serving Andrews.
1501: TROJAN 43 is now down too low for understandable copy of his transmissions....370.925
1505: CAPE 11 to Devil Ops asking if they can find out the current wx at Langley...261.0
1505: HOIST 95 (KC-10A, 85-0031, 305th AMW McGuire AFB) reports airborne at this time to Andrews CP...378.1 (This is the same KC-10A that came into ADW earlier as REACH 01)
1514: TROJAN 44, IDs as a single F-22 enters W-386 at FL 230 for the next 30 minutes...249.8
1518: HOIST 95 to McGuire CP...ETA there at 1950Z, A-1, no cargo, 1 pax...319.4
1519: RAVEN flight calling Raven Ops "on Victor"...143.8
1525: COLT flight leaving Pax area...281.8
1528: CAPE 11 flight to Norfolk TRACON...370.925
1530: COLT flight with Pax reporting RTB...354.8
1532: TROJAN 42 (F-22A Langley) reports RTB...249.8
1536: Appears COLT and RAVEN flights are moving out of the Pax area together...281.8/354.8
1538: TROJAN 41 flight (F-22A) (should be TROJAN 41 and 43 remaining - 44 and 42 went it alone) leaving W-386...push 5...249.8
1539: TROJAN 41 to Norfolk TRACON...370.925
1543: COLT 1 to Raven Ops to report they're coming back as two single ships...COLT 1 is Code 1 and 10 minutes out...347.2
1544: HAGAR 70 to Dover CP to report he'll be on the ground in 5-10 minutes...A-2 for two writeups...training 50% complete...needs bus for 7 upon arrival...349.4
1545: COLT 2 to Raven Ops to report 10 out, Code 1...347.2
1551: JOSA 899 (C-21A, 84-0128, 311th AS) reports off Andrews at 1945Z...378.1

1600: End of log.

Ref below: Jack, excellent catch. Thank you. That proves the MTN A-10s at least kept that low band freq.

Ref below below: Tony, I shouldn't have even logged that turkey burger but had the MARLIN 61 typed before I remembered it's a nothing bird that didn't belong in the log. :)
