HARDY-99 with ZDC-Norfolk asking about the winds/WX. 327.8
2127- HARDY-99 still with ZDC-Norfolk, said they had problems hearing on another freq and asked for another. Got 27.75, 127.75 I guess.
Maybe a Selfridge KC-135?

Unid fighter climbing on 285.4 ZDC-Casino, leveling at 17k.
1150- DEVIL-91 NJ ANG F-16 to ZDC-Swann 360.7 passing FL200. Pretty crappy sounding radio.
1153- DEVILs push to ZDC-Potomac 307.025. First time I've heard any milair on this freq, usually they're routing around this area or too low to be with center yet. I can just barely hear the controller on it. No interflight heard yet.
1157- DEVIL-91 to ZDC-Linden 322.55 at FL260. Advises they are line abreast, two miles either side of #1.

1201- FOX-311 calling Langley Dispatch on 141.75 while searching for an interflight. Got a response right away. Has an A-5 and two others onboard.
1208- DEVIL-91 to ZDC-Moorefield 371.9, still at FL260.

Posting from VA Beach

Hi all,

Well, I'm down here in VA Beach and the weather is so terrible for the airshow, I decided to sit in the
hotel and watch the Giants game with the scanners going next to me.

1642z Heard Giantkiller working CUBA 04 (Sounded like) on 118.125 heading to W-122. GK told him to use
251.6 for primary in area and 135.75. He told CUBA to use 251.3 as an alternate in 122.

Just heard on scanner the airshow was on hold and the Snowbirds just cancelled their act.
Misty rain, low ceilings and very windy conditions here.

Any ideas or corrections on the CUBA callsign, feel free.

Yes, I went from 10am-2pm. The weather was dry for the most part. It was more like Maine temps,
around 53 degrees, windy, cold and the ceiling was hovering from 600-1000 ft for the time I was there.
They cancelled many acts. Mostly anything that was military. They cancelled the infamous fleet flyby.
The F-15 Strike Eagle did go up and do some burner passes but could not do any aerobatic maneuvers due
to the low ceiling. Unfortunately, he set off a couple of High G sensors on his plane. One on the wing and
one on a tail. One sensor was reading 113%. Needless to say, they had to land immediately after that.
When we were heading out of the base, the F-18 demo did go up.

The static displays were almost none. I've never seen it this bad in all my years going to Oceana. There
was a C-130 from Little Rock, a Delta 757 painted in Breast Cancer Awareness colors, a few F-18s,
a couple T-38s, some trainers and a couple helos. Absolutely no C-5, KC-135, KC-10, AWACs or any
other Heavy military planes whatsoever.

Still, even though the weather was more like New England than Virginia, it was nice to see some fellow
milcommers and airshow regulars again. Nice to meet Dan Tekker whom is also on this list.

I'm here until this coming Saturday and the weather is going to clear up on Monday. Should be nice
and sunny in the 70s all week so we will make up for this weekend. For milair, Oceana should be back
to normal ops in a couple days and I'll have plenty to see and hear while I'm down here to keep me happy.

Edit:18:13z
Update for Sunday airshow from hotel -
Weather is getting worse. Snowbirds are leaving and taking off now. Using 119.6 for departure and 333.3 for A-A while in transit.
Heard on Security channel 1 140.225 FM that the Blues just cancelled their show.
Haven't heard anything flying on the show boss freq either.

1826z
More Snowbirds took off and hearing more A-A on 242.600 and 272.100
Currently wkg ZDC on 121.875

1834z
Just heard on 142.725 FM Fire Dispatch that the airshow is terminated. It's over, everyone is leaving.

Oceana NAS Show

This morning was miserable in VA Beach. Glad I went yesterday and got some nice pics even though the ceiling was right at 1000 ft.

I got some decent photos of the Snow Birds, F-15 and F-18 demo teams and the Blue Angels with Fat Albert.

I have a site I go to outside the show area and can get some great photos.

The static display area looked real thin this year in comparison to previous years. I think the late date might have been the reason for that.

Hasn't been a good year for local airshows wx wise.
OC Maryland back in June also ended early with coastal fog.
Also static displays getting tougher as units don't have aircraft or crews to spare.
Andrews hasn't had a B-1 static display for couple years even though they advertise one every year.
Reasons are obvious.
Nice pics though lyons..

One oddball log from late last night.
(AE0446) C-32B #99-6143 level 37k 486th FLTS? 0705z.
Showed up in Europe today as GINO 08.

All these reports from Oceana make me glad I bagged the trip down to Virginia Beach this year. I've had kind of a crummy time the last 2 years, so I was planning on skipping this year, but put it back on the schedule when they booked the Snowbirds. I woke up at 6:15 both mornings this weekend, checked the weather, and went back to sleep.

Unrelated: saw a C-17 at ADW at 1637L this afternoon. At first I thought it was a departure, but the flightpath looked more like it was a downwind to then turn final for the 1s. Was likely an arrival from the NE. Any ideas/IDs?

[EDIT: Thanks, Mark!]

REACH 175 was coming in from overseas C-17 #03-3114 172 AW/Ms ANG
to Andrews at that time.I noticed it cause it was med-evac mission but with Reach callsign as I rolled out the door at that time.
Seemed odd at the moment.Normally uses EVAC tail# for callsign.

I was at Oceana Saturday - I've never seen so many Hornets in one place! Will post later about that, as well as Patterson logs for the tail end of last week.

Just had REACH 699 (C-17A, 98-0053) depart Patterson for Rota. Arrived the other day as REACH 480. Like the last flight I saw between here and there, this C-17 has been reassigned to McChord - it is no longer with the 97th AMW.

Also now hearing a SAM xxxx flight calling Buckeye on 349.400 - no response.

NAS Oceana Air Show report from Saturday - not going to bother listing all the tails like I normally would, because I saw nearly 100 Hornets that I couldn't ID. Frequencies noted (not including security, because I'm sure most of you guys already know those):

123.900 Discrete (PA Feed)
127.075 Air Boss
139.8125 (NFM) Blue Angels Tower/Comm Cart
142.6125 (NFM) Blue Angels Unid - maybe security/ramp movement
237.800 Blue Angels - ground checks/Blue Angels solos
275.350 Blue Angels diamond (out of show box)
272.100 Snowbirds (only frequency noted with them)
284.250 Blue Angels (while in show box)
376.025 F-15E Strike Eagle demo

I didn't hear communications from Fat Albert or the aircraft-PA feed while on ground. Once airborne, the PA feed was simply the show box frequency. Did anyone get either of those?

I drove 10 hours through the night (to and from Oceana) just to see the show. Most of the acts were cancelled, the weather was terrible (the first airshow I've ever attended where I could see my breath), and my pictures are almost all backlit, underexposed, or blurred.

Am I happy I went? You bet. It was my first time to the show, and I got to see the White Hornet (albeit far away, since I was still walking), the Blues and Snowbirds for the only time this year, and the last Fat Albert JATO takeoff I'll ever get to experience.

Oddities on Huntress Freq

About 0145 last night (Sunday/Monday), SAM 5900 came up on 139.15 calling "Renegade." Got no response, so he went to 260.9 and tried again for Renegade. Got no answer there, either.

I've never heard anyone working a station other than Huntress on these two freqs, never heard any SAM aircraft on them and have never run into Renegade. And shouldn't there be another digit in that SAM number? I heard it twice.

1745z MAZDA 71 flight doing the same direct Shaw.
Also logged a BLUE 11 KC-10 I believe as well.Req customs etc.

Steve,

These are a little odd but happened aperiodically. Renegade is part of the JADOC (Joint Air Defense Operations Center), Bolling AFB Wash DC. Every now and then an acft, inbound to Andrews will be contacted by Renegade for a "sparkle" check. You might hear them refer to "sparkle" which is a ground-based system of red & green lasers used by the JADOC around the DC area

SAM 5900 should be a good number---they are 4-digits and right now have been working in the 57XX, 58XX and now evidently in the 59XX series.

139.15 (a DC ANG F-16 tac freq) is a strange one for Renegade. He normally uses 260.9
