I'm in the Indy area, mostly downtown, but I live about 45 minutes north and I hear it there as well.

It's on 163.2500, I get it on all my scanners (796, 296, and 250) and it's all I get on this freq.

It sounds like nothing I have heard anywhere else, so i can't even describe it.

I'm hoping someone in the Indy area can listen for a while and maybe identify it.

I have looked online for a .wav or .mp3 example, but to no avail.

There are several hospitals licensed for Indiana on that frequency, so it could be some kind of medical instrumentation. Does it sound like data? Can you describe the sound better?

After spending time doing a little more research online, it appears to be a paging freq. Not sure who for, but it sounds very similar to http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/flex.wav and http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/9402125EJC.wav ...quicktime needed, apparently.

I had no idea paging freqs were in the fed range. I was told that the flood alert boxes on rivers are in the fed range. Does anyone have an example of what those sound like?

163.250 is a medical paging freq.I hear it all the time on the NW side of Metro Indianapolis/Marion County. No voice traffic.Just digital paging.I would say the it is being used by VA hospital for there Doctors, etc

It is a common business paging frequency, probably not VA, but usually hospital related.
