Just heard a plane on the Tyler milair freq talking to ARTCC about going to Baton ROuge, then changing his destination to "November Tango Uniform," which is apparently the callsign for NAS Oceana.

Just heard Spad 21 (or what sounded like that callsign) on 360.6 (I have it listed as Mineral Wells- FW Center) asking for "Direct to Shepard AFB going from 20 to 22."

Anyone know what Spad 21 is flying?

Anyone have any recent milair logs or freqs?
These call signs are commonly used out of NASJRB or the old Carswell Airforce Base.
SPAD call signs are used by the Air Force and fly the F-16
Hunter call signs are used by the Navy and did fly the F-14 now in F-18
Cowboy call signs are Marines flying F-18
Rocket call signs are Lockheed test pilots usuallly in F-16
Rocket 01 call sign is used primarily for Airshows or when practicing the airshow routine

FYI - The "Hunters" disbanded in 2007 so you won't hear that callsign for VF-201 anymore. There is not currently a Navy fighter squadron at NAS Ft. Worth. The Cowboys of VMFA-112 are the only ones flying the F-18 there. Also for you guys here are a couple of references to callsigns that are pretty accurate however none are ever 100% accurate because they change so much. I use these sites to cross-reference callsigns alot and as you listen more you'll be able to tell what kind of aircraft it likely is...

Any milair activity in and around Houston?

Yes.
371.900
351.950
316.150
269.600
257.950

371.900 and 351.950 are mainly heard around here in Bryan.

kkn50, NASA 923 is a callsign for a NASA trainer jet (T-35?). The 9xx refers (I think) to the tail number of the aircraft. They pass through College Station all the time, but usually operate on VHF (128.075/Houston Center).

After a little research, I think I have found some of the callsigns that kkn50 was talking about:

>COWBOY refers to F/A-18s out of Fort Worth
>CHILI refers to C-5s out of Kelly AFB
>RANDY refers to T-38s out of Randolph AFB
>The NASA 9xx callsigns refer to the astronaut training aircraft. The 9xx comes from their registration number (i.e. N923NA). If you hear NASA 926 (N926NA) or NASA 928 (N928NA), those two are WB-57Fs from Johnson Space Center.
>If anyone who lives in the Bryan/College Station area hears aircraft with the callsign LUZON, they are T-37s from Randolph.

By the way, in an earlier post I was talking about the LANCER callsign. I was mistaken. What I heard was CUTLASS (I heard it again a few weeks ago).

Heard what sounded like TX National Guard CH-47's dropping & picking up stuff at Ft Wolters Training Center in Mineral Wells on 149.400 AM.
I don't know if this freq is assigned to FWTC or RTAHP in Grand Prairie or something else.
I also heard them on 242.900 wich is used in Grand Prairie.
In the past I have heard stuff on 149.400 but I thought it was Sheppard or NASFW

TX National Guard Chopper Freq's - North Texas

Howdy

I would suspect you are correct that they are likely from the old Navy Dallas (TXANG) base in Grand Prairie as I see them around every ~4-8 weeks heading either north or northwest from the Tarrant County (Ft. Worth) area going one of several 'LZ-Drop Zones', sometimes with SOF types in training mode.

If you can catch a Call Sign one of the TX guys might 'confirm' the origination point....for those in or near Eagle Mt. Lake, I think they also use(d) the now small National Guard area (formerly a large National Guard Base years ago) near and just south of Newark, TX and due north of JRB (Carswell) Ft. Worth.....thats another story altogether...

Let us know what you find and hope the TX guys chime into the discussion....

Thx

Bill

A while back I noticed Fort Wolters Training Center here in Mineral Wells got a new tower with 2 antennas about the same time I quit hearing Range Control on 149.425. Today I found them on 149.225 PL 67.0 and 149.500 PL 67.0. Both appear to be simplex. The tower is only about 50' so they probably can't be heard much farther east than Weatherford.

Yesterday I heard a helicopter working Range Control on 47.000.
First time I picked up anything on low band from there.
Years ago I remeber seeing 47.000 listed as a common Texas Army National Guard frequency.

Sat

Listening to SAT App/Dep (271-359) on 307.000MHz and getting a few milair callsigns...

Shiner 2: unknown (was logged by kkn50 last May in San Antonio also).

Hangover 8: RAFB, 12 FTW

I tuned to this hoping to catch some Omahas (Customs AMD) out of SAT (I noticed all 3 birds were out this morning) and caught these guys. I don't know if these are actually landing at SAT or just passing through the area... on to RAFB and elsewhere.

Mysterious sight seen in Houston sky

Mysterious sight seen in Houston sky on 9/11, putting some on edge | abc13.com

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Our newsroom was flooded with calls Saturday by viewers alarmed about a plane flying in circles over north Harris County on the 9-11 anniversary.

A NASA spokesman said this is an unfortunate coincidence that all of this misunderstanding took place on the anniversary of 9/11. He says this is a high-altitude research aircraft that was flying at 50,000 feet.

Just heard and watched 5 F/A-18Cs from VFA-131 "Wildcats" (from NAS Oceana) land at SAT on 12R. Man them puppies are loud.

They came in 2 groups. First, a pair flew over the airport generally following a 120 degree bearing, then split off and circled from the northeast around and lined up on 12R. Through the binoculars my cohort saw 3 more from the northeast, who followed a similar pattern flying by SAT, splitting off, then landing on 12R.

Just watched the 5 F/A-18Cs take off about 3 minutes ago. They were using the callsign "Bobcat." All 5 low and fast, cool to watch.

I have had quite a treat today looking out my window at the final half mile of approach for runways 12L and 12R at SAT.

Besides listening to Omaha37A assist ICE all day, I've had the opportunity to see a C-23 Sherpa (which comes in quite a bit through SAT), two T-34Cs from NASCC (VT-27), a UH-60Q Blackhawk (Dustoff, which comes by at least once a day), and a T-6A Texan II.

Lastly, one that caught me off guard was a civilian T-38. It was painted gunmetal grey, with darker (less faded) paint covering the former military tail codes. I thought I read "N805F," but the n-number search didn't come back to a T-38. This thing was cool, and I hope to see it at the air park when I leave work. I read that a very few T-38s are in civilian hands, I just hope I can get his n-number.
