VHF refers to VHF-Hi Band which are 160.nnnn frequencies. You are asking about UHF frequencies. It's an interesting question. UHF is very congested. They really want everyone on 700. From a technical standpoint, it is possible. From a political and potentially FCC one, I doubt they would.

I honestly never really understood why they even had VHF in TACN to begin with.

There are spots where studies showed vhf had better coverage. Thus the few vhf sites. Its like why MOSWIN is mostly VHF with a few 7/800 sites

I'm visiting the Tri-Cities (Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol) area soon. What TACN sites should I monitor to pick-up local radio traffic?

The Sullivan County (050) site should cover most of Kingsport and Bristol. Buffalo Mountain (051) will cover the vast, vast majority of Johnson City. I have the other Sullivan and Washington County sites configured in my scanner, but never have had a need (that I'm aware of) to monitor the others. Both counties seem to adore broadly-deployed encryption, but you should still be able to monitor Washington County/Johnson City fire, EMS, and of course Tennessee Highway Patrol. Enjoy your time in the area!

You will hear TN state LEA's, and some of the local FD/EMS... Only some though, as there is VERY HEAVY use of full time encryption there. And yes this includes events at BMS.

Unkown talkgroups

I have a few talkgroups that I have found I thought I would share to see if any
body might know what they are.

2105 , 2107 mention of C1 to C2 , 2109 , 2117 , 2093 encrypted , 1129 mention of school buses , and 13012

Hearing TGID 1129 on the Oswald dome site in Polk County. I going to make an assumption that this TGID belongs to Hamilton County since there are over twenty other TGID's in the 1100 range in that group. Can anyone verify this assumption?

Earlier this morning I heard TWRA put out an APB for a person who assaulted a police officer (Region 1? Dispatch 1, unencrypted). I'm guessing it went out over all of TACN and had to be in the clear due to intra-agency. They gave the description, driver, and the tag.

I hope we can continue to hear critical APBs in the clear as an extra set of eyeballs on the highway never hurts. I'd say kudos to TWRA for putting it out over dispatch 1, but I know they didn't do it for the public :p
