Thruway Authority Maintenance

The Thruway Authority has radio channels for each Maintenance Section that are separate from the statewide 453.425/525 system. These channels can be quite active during snow plowing season.

I have been attempting to verify and submit data for the Buffalo and Syracuse Divisions to the database.

I recently confirmed by monitoring and submitted the following:
Batavia 460.3125 pl 123.0
Henrietta 460.5875 pl 123.0
Manchester 460.6125 97.4
Weedsport 460.3125 97.4

I have tentative info but have not confirmed since they are out of my reception range:
Westfield 460.3125 123.0
Silver Creek 460.6125 123.0
Syracuse 460.2875 97.4 (Syracuse frequency from FCC license - no other confirmation)

I am also looking for Buffalo & Tonawanda possibly 460.6375 or 460.5875. PL will be 123.0 for the Buffalo Division.

In the Syracuse Division, Verona and Herkimer will be PL 97.4 and may be on 460.3125, 460.5875, 460.6125 or 460.6375.

Can any one in these areas confirm activity?

Thanks! PL should be 123.0. Do you know if both Buffalo (main line) and Tonawanda share the channel?
Tonawanda maintains the Grand Island Bridge/Niagara section.

Based on your info and other frequency use in the area I strongly suspect Verona will be 460.5875 pl97.4.

I hope someone in the Verona area can monitor and confirm.

I finally got the Thruway page cleaned up, and it's really starting to take shape now with the addition of the Maintenance info. FYI to anyone who isn't sure what their local frequency might be, search between 450-470 MHz and look for the PL to match whatever Division you're in (either 97.4 or 123.0). I will work on posting a complete list of licensed frequencies broken down by area when I get a chance, unless k2hz beats me to it.

As far as I know all the Maintenance frequencies are the 460s on 12.5 splits. The FCC data base is not of much value because they licensed several frequencies at each site that are not necessarily used for that area. Frequencies may be for backup of adjacent sites or future use. Here in upstate, most maintenance frequencies are on a tower at a nearby interchange or rest area, not on the wide area towers with the statewide channels. They originally put the Batavia channel at the Attica wide area site and it caused too much overlap so they moved it down to Batavia. That is why many Maintenance sites don't have the "KRX" Division call sign.

This is why I am asking for monitoring confirmation to match the frequency to the specific maintenance section. I made some good guesses from FCC and other data but not good enough for the database without confirmation.

Traffic on these maintenance channels is prettty informal and it may be necessary to listen for mention of mileposts or truck numbers to be sure what you are hearing.

Not all of the Maintenance frequencies are in the 460s. Harriman and Nyack are both operating in the 453s. As far as the licenses, many of the new Maintenance repeaters are indeed licensed separately under call signs starting with W, however Newburgh is licensed under KRA529.

FCC info by itself is never good enough for the database, but it's certainly a start. At the very least, it will give listeners a starting point for some frequencies to monitor, which they will hopefully then confirm usage firsthand.

Low Band? 42.60 ULS License - Public Safety Pool, Conventional License - WQAV394 - NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY AUTHORITY

All of the low band licenses (16 of them total under FRN 0004129540) are for the New York State Canal System, not the Thruway. Anything used on the Thruway will be UHF.

I'll keep an ear open for it. I'm 5 miles from Exit 32 & within the Verona Maintenance Section.

Yes, they were sharing frequencies with DOT as part of the Canal system (not the Thruway), however they were getting constant interference on the 47 MHz frequencies, so the NYSP granted them use of the 42.60 frequency (along with neighboring states, that frequency is normally set aside for State Police use).

Syracuse maintenance is indeed on 460.2875 PL 97.4. I have the frequency in my PRO-106.

It looks that way, yes. Each site is licensed for only that 460.3125 frequency, and the repeaters are licensed for 50 watts with an 80 mile separation between them, which is more than enough distance.
