To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

What is the right way to set up the G5 to alert on two tone pages sent on a p25 talkgroup?

I understand the alternatives, but this is what I have to work with today. The analog simulcast signal is nearly not hearable, byt the p25 is solid, and would like to use it since there is little hope of anything else at this time.

My G5 has a noticeable hiss when receiving a transmission. The volume of the hiss seems to be steady with respect to the volume control.
Is this typical, or normal ??

OK for those having the audio issue I need your assistance... the next time your unit experiences this issue instead of pulling the battery try this. Hold down both side buttons and the top voice playback button at the same time once the screen goes off and the 3 lights come on release. This should power cycle your unit. i am trying to determine if the issue is hardware or software.

Just experienced it for the first time. I turned it on and immediately experienced horrendous audio. The 3 button reset didn't fix it.

I'm no expert but I didn't think you could do two tone on p25? There's too much compression to guarantee the tones will be sent with the proper 'resolution' to be decoded..

Soft Reboot

In regards to the audio problem, while driving home from work my G5 was in ' audio failure '. I pulled over and did the 3 button reboot (twice) with no change. I then did a battery pull reset and this corrected the problem (for now). I can't put into words how frustrating this has become. When the unit is working properly it truly is a great monitor-scanner. Ugh . . .

Motorola figured out quick call over P25 about 2 years ago in the APX. The tones are injected with error correction built in, and are properly decoded on the receiving end.

I've had the G5 for two days and I'm having the degraded audio issues as well. Three button reset dId NOT fix the problem. Reprogrammed with the PPS and it worked (didn't have screwdriver for a battery pull). Unless a fix is found quick, this is pretty much useless when mobile. I can't pull over for battery pulls or reprogramming wit a laptop just to hear the audio. The RX on it is fantastic "when it works."

I can have no decode because of no signal strength on analog...
Or maybe some decode on p25.

PLEASE enable this for me to try. Even if I need to do something secret to enable it.

Trust me Guys I am working on the audio issue all data points help so I appreciate your input. Also addressing the QCII over p25 we do not currently support it. The reason we went with the alerting scheme the we did is we wanted something that was just as reliable as QCII over analog. P25 being modulation based it causes any tone sent over that system to change the frequency a bit and can cause missed pages this is even apparent in current implementations of QCII over P25. We are working on other ways to alert over P25 so that you have multiple options. I cannot currently comment on what those are but know that we are working on them.

Dave I got in my car and turned on the G5 just now. Muffled low audio from the start. Went to do a battery pull and still had the unit on. As I started loosening the two screws in the back the audio corrected and the muffling went away. Don't know if this helps or not.

The reception on this is fantastic on trunked systems and the portability is what really peaked my interest. I will say that on the Miami-Dade P25 system this unit is keeps up with my XTS and APX. This is system is Harris' flavor of LSM and it is horrible on a scanner mobile. G5 is following like a champ.

David, somewhere in this thread I think you mentioned you had big customers who were not reporting the audio problem. Any chance those users are using in a multicast and not a simulcast environment? I was just thinking that my problems were on Motorola simulcast systems, and same with someone else I know. If the big customer is a statewide system, they might not have as many simulcast areas as local city/county systems.

Supposedly they have a bunch of them on Simulcast systems in Michigan, but it's possible the users are parked on a VHF channel for paging purposes and then switching to a P25 channel to monitor the actual radio traffic after tone out.

I hate to say I have not had the muffled audio problem, because I don't want to jinx mine. :)

However, I also haven't "pulled the battery", and my battery was already installed when I received mine. Is there by chance any correlation between removing the battery and the audio problem? Just wondering if it's a physical problem due to something being pushed up close to the speaker, or pressing on the speaker, that's worse due to heating or battery placement.

Back to lurking.

I've only had my G4 for a couple days and have been quite impressed with it's performance on our regional P25 Phase 1 trunked system. I should have purchased one a long time ago rather than dealing with the choppy audio from my PSR-500 or PRO-668.

I'm curious if there's a correlation between the audio problem and volume levels. I typically listen at levels 25-35 around the house. In the car, I have it at 45-55. I ran it for over 8 continuous hours on a fairly busy dispatch talk group in varying temperatures (60's to 80's) and did not have any audio issues yesterday.

I'll be bringing it to work tomorrow but the volume will continue to be low. As a dispatcher and call taker, we must keep background noises to a minimum. I have a 10 hour shift so it'll stay on for most of that time. I'll have access to a Motorola APX 6000 to compare performance. I'll also be checking for any audio issues.
