Oh ok. I didn't realize the situation with the 3 versus 4 battery issue. Although I have needed 3 batteries charged and have been guilty of throwing a charged battery or near charged in the 4th slot. External chargers. I didn't realize the severity of the situation. I still stand by my statement about charging batteries in the scanner. Although (we) don't recommend it I don't think Uniden thinks it that much of an issue as noted by my original post

I have been charging the 4 batteries in my HP-1 as required since October 2010 and never had the slightest problem. [Yes, I have a MAHA 9000 for other purposes in my other radio work]. It is wise to adjust the charge time and not just accept the default setting. Over the 4 years I have replaced the original Uniden cells with higher capacity ones as the battery technology [and/or the sales department started writing the labels instead of the engineering dept.] improved.

At the moment, in my 436 I am using non-rechargeable throw-away cells [I came into a large supply at a price I could not refuse], actually they seem to last an amazing number of hours if you do not run the backlight constantly. BTW, I have no problem with the so-called 'time setting problem' I just leave the USB cable plugged in as my PC runs 24/7 along with my 996XT which runs 24/7 on a nearby P-25 public safety system creating logs under ProScan.

Jake..you mixed batteries that should not have been mixed, and if you have the correct batteries for the 436 then why not charge them in the 436? I have charged the proper batteries in scanners for many years, and never had any issues.

Jake..read the manual. I've spoken with you, and I know you can read the manual.

Do what the manual says. And if the manual does not have the info you need, or if you do not understand the manual or what to do, then come here and ask....before you do anything. You know how to use these forums very well. I also think you know when to ask rather than taking risks or chances.

Try it, and the system will work for you.

Jake..work with us...ask.

PS: Check your PM

You know thinking about this charging situation. I think anyone who has had issues with charging in the unit has a case. 1. Uniden doesn't provide a charger as most all companies do if they recommend charging externally. 2. They don't tell you that you need a separate charger to charge the batteries, 3. Common sense would dictate that Uniden would have only included alkaline batteries as other companies do for products that require batteries. Why give rechargeables that you would have no need for unless you have an external charger? It's not a requirement from uniden that buyers of their scanners must have am external charger 4. Lastly why does the software give you A. The charging time option B. Ask you if you want to start charging. I'm calling B.S on the "you can't charge the batteries in the unit", and the "not recommended" theories. At the very least I would think there would be a stock on the battery package that says "warning, we recommend charging these batteries in an external charger" "Btw if you don't have one these batteries we included are useless to you"
I have to side with JakePortland on this one.

1. We don't recommend external charging. We are neutral on the issue. internal or external is fine.
2. You do not need a separate charger, as long as you are OK with a 14 hour charge time.
3. See 1 and 2.
4. For those who use lower capacity batteries or who prefer to do partial chages only.

Then I saw your last part and realized you were using contraarguments...we are in agreement. :)

You should never mix batteries of different capacities or of different charge states (as ST Bob astutely pointed out...good catch, Bob).

what?

I charge my batteries in each of my Uniden scanners without any issues.
The home patrol requires you to set the type of batteries you use in milliamps.
if they exploded it wasnt that!
I would say cross-polarization was the fault here.Meaning you put one battery in backwards + to -or - to +
hence the meltdown.(hopefully not leaking into the scanner)
you dont need a battery charger.Waste of $ unless you are in a rush to charge em.
Make sure when you get new rechargeable batteries you put them in right in the 436HP.(dont buy cheap ones on ebay!)
To my memory the home patrol batteries go one direction on the top and one direction on the bottom.

Jake,

Thanks for bringing the battery info to our attention. I, for one, have learned a lot from the others about batteries, chargers and charging. Since your post, I have ordered a new charger, one of the ones recommended by others here on the list.
Good job!

Will these charge any battery? I'm using Energizer 2300 mAH and I have the 5 hour charger but when I put them in the bcd396xt I'm lucky if I get 2-4 hours before they are dead again. I'm looking something better.

I bet your charger needs to charge in "pairs" and I'd also bet you are only charging 3 at a time.

Correct?

Yes when the 3 die I charge them.

I was thinking of the samething. I have 2 sets of four but I may have to buy another set and when I get 4 needs to be charged I may do that test see what happens.

As others (and myself) have highly recommended, the MAHA C-9000 is an excellent choice if you are in the market for a charger..

This charger is also getting good reviews...

I saw the first link a hour ago I was reading through the pages. Do the chargers have to be in pairs or can charge 3 or does it have to be 2 and 4?

On both of the linked chargers you can charge 1,2,3 or 4 cells at a time. They don't need to be in pairs.

Thanks. I forgot to add this can you charge Energizer in the charger or have to use the ones show in the picture/links?
