What are the rough dimensions of that case. Were looking at buying a new truck by the end of the year and I'd like to see if there is space someplace to mount it.

111x73 mm

Again, it won't stand being in heat as is until I can get some made with ABS or something. We might have to have them made...dunno yet.

Excellent, my idea was to measure other locations, not necessarily the dashboard. The new trucks have large expansive console boxes, with sliding covers. Now just to find the right truck, sounds easy but it hasn't been.

Thanks so I have listed it on Ebay, and will see what is being developed for the SDS200, love the scanner but it is NOT mobile friendly for mounting options.

Steve Holloway made a remote head for SDS scanners using a ARM Cortex M4 developer board, those are $10, and a touch display, those are $30, but the development have not been finished yet and no code released but the prototype are working as shown in the video below.

Is that the guy that started the thread?

Mine would be done long ago but the devil is in the details. Fonts, font sizes that differ from factory like big last line. Reused font hex assignments which uniden does, custom glyphs like close call and much of the ancillary text uses. Slip stream GPS with control data? PWM display driving for brightness control, USB detection and reacquisition on unexpected disconnect, RFI considerations, commas where commas shouldn't be. (hi Bob) It's easy just to spit out the display lines. The weird 0/1 at the end of SDS100 volume push pop up display change that is not delimited. Not trying to crap on his project just saying as soon as one problem ends another begins, lots of interdependent things.
They could have made it much easier for people but they didn't.
I wish he would sell it. Nice to have options.

I would have liked to learn more about the unit built by jarvis_road (post #5) but he seems to have vanished.

It's a completely different display. Nothing about it is the same as the last version.

I'm trying to get the housing prints ironed out. They fit well but just have some imperfections I probably can't get past. They aren't going to work for sitting on a hot dash in the sun as they are just made of PLA. I plan on trying to make some from some better material in the future once I get the design finalized.

Another option could be to supply buyers with the 3D printed file and they would be responsible for getting a suitable case produced.

Getting one-off parts 3D printed from aluminum is fairly cheap if you already have the design and file.

Might be a good way to take that hurdle off your mind.

Aluminum? Bet that's expensive!

Since I don't have the actual design I can't get a firm price, but using a calculator from a company, it looks to be just over $100. Not super cheap, but compared to purchasing $700 scanners, it is not much more than an entitlement key.

Is an aluminum housing necessary? Couldn't a plastic case suffice? While I'm asking questions, how much heat does the hardware generate?

Aluminum wouldn't be necessary at all. It would provide some RF benefits by acting as shielding, but that's about it.

And I don't think it's so much about the heat the equipment generates but instead about how hot a vehicle interior gets in the sun. Temps over 170F are possible.

I could print them from polycarbonate, the same stuff I use for the SDS100 battery clips.
